Notes

  1. One decree the Court had included in its list of bench opinions for the term has been omitted: Nebraska v. Wyoming, 534 U.S. 40 (2001), a per curiam decree approving the parties' settlement.
  2. The Court in Adams dismissed certiorari as improvidently granted.
  3. The Court in Mathias dismissed certiorari as improvidently granted. The Court stated that it had become clear after full briefing and argument that the petitioners were the prevailing parties in the lower court who were seeking review of findings they considered erroneous, but that were not essential to the judgment. The Court had additionally granted cert. in two other cases on the same issue that arose from the same factual context.
  4. Rehnquist was initially appointed by Nixon to the Court as an Associate Justice. He was subsequently appointed to serve as Chief Justice by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed in that position September 26, 1986.
