  • Decisions that do not note an argument date were decided without oral argument. Decisions that do not note a Justice delivering the Court's opinion are per curiam.
  • Multiple concurrences and dissents within a case are numbered, with joining votes numbered accordingly. Justices frequently join multiple opinions in a single case; each vote is subdivided accordingly.
  • An asterisk ( * ) in the Court's opinion denotes that it was only a majority in part or a plurality. An asterisk in a joining vote denotes that the justice joined it only in part.
  • A dash ( - ) denotes that the Justice concurred or dissented without filing a separate opinion.

Notes

  1. Two decrees that the Court included in its list of bench opinions for the term have been omitted from this table: Alaska v. United States, Jan. 26, 2006, a per curiam decree that entered the Court's judgment from its prior term decision (see Alaska v. United States, 545 U.S. 75 (2005)); and Arizona v. California, Mar. 27, 2006, a decree entered to approve the parties' settlement.
  2. Maryland v. Blake dismissed certiorari as improvidently granted.
  3. The decision in Mohawk Industries, Inc. summarily vacated and remanded the case for further consideration in light of Anza v. Ideal Steel Supply Corp., 547 U.S. 451 (2006).
  4. Only the reargument date for Hudson v. Michigan is given in the table; the case was first argued January 9, 2006, and then scheduled for reargument after Justice Alito's confirmation because his vote was needed to break a tie.
  5. Only the reargument date for Kansas v. Marsh is given in the table; the case was first argued December 7, 2005, and then scheduled for reargument after Justice Alito's confirmation because his vote was needed to break a tie.
