BIT Sindri (formerly known as Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri but now Birsa Institute of Technology, Sindri) is a Government engineering college in Jharkhand, India. BIT Sindri was equipped with most modern and latest lab. facilities which invited students from many engineering colleges including IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) for internship in BIT Sindri. BIT has received funding from the World Bank for various of its projects and research which attract world's attention.
The placements at BIT Sindri include major companies recruiting from the campus such as TCS,IBM,Tata Steel,JSW etc. Recently Outlook India ranked the college as the 26th best College of India. The alumni of the college are working at both private sector companies as well as the Public sector Units. BIT Sindri has an alumni association commonly known as BITSAA. BIT Sindri has produced engineers who are serving all across the globe.
BIT Sindri has recently organized the Golden class reunion of its 64 Batch on 23 November 2014. The institute is controlled administratively by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Jharkhand, Ranchi and academically it is affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag for conducting examinations and awarding degrees. All courses are approved by All India Council of Technical Education and most of the undergraduate programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. The institute is controlled administratively by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Jharkhand, Ranchi and academically it is affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag for conducting examinations and awarding degrees. All courses are approved by All India Council of Technical Education and most of the undergraduate programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. The main aim of the institute is to cater to the needs of the nation for technological manpower development and research programs comparable to the best of the world. The college today offers B.Tech courses in 10 disciplines of engineering namely Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy, Production, Chemical, Electronics & Communications, Civil, Mining, Computer Science, Information technology, having NBA accreditation. The college possesses world class amenities which include multimedia auditoriums, seminar rooms, a state of-the art well-stocked rich E-library, well-equipped modern laboratories and campus wide network. The wide range of activities on campus, fully residential hostels, good sports facilities and never dying zeal of staffs and students for pursuit of excellence provides a pleasant and intellectually stimulating, proactive, conductive environment to students to feed their curiosities / interest and help them to prepare for the professional, academic and social life.

Departments at BIT Sindri:

1.Mechanical:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 1949 when the institute was born. The department offers four years B.Tech degree course with an annual intake of 105 students. Two years postgraduate program is also offered leading to M.Tech degree with specialization in Heat Power Engineering, Machine Design and Production Technology. The annual intake in the postgraduate program is 10.

The department has well equipped laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The important laboratories include: Strength of Materials, Applied Mechanics, Heat Engine, Hydraulics, Aerodynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Solar Energy, Tribology, Industrial Engineering Lab etc. The department has a huge workshop consisting of various units like Carpentry, Smithy, Foundry, Machine Shop etc.

2.Electrical:

The Department of Electrical Engineering was started in the year 1949 when the institute was born. The department offers four years B.Tech. degree course with an annual intake of 100 students. Eighteen months postgraduate program is also offered leading to M.Tech. degree with specialization in Control System and Power System. The annual intake in the postgraduate program is 10. The department is also looking after an electrical sub-station and is maintaining a 14 Km distribution line of BIT campus.

The department has well equipped laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The important laboratories include: Computer Lab, Control System Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Electrical Machines Lab, Instrumentation Lab, Circuit Lab, High Voltage Lab and Electrical Workshop. The prestigious million volt Atkinson High Tension Laboratory of the department is considered as first of its kind in India .

3.Production:

The Department of Production Engineering, first in Asia, was started in the year 1955 with substantial financial assistance coming from TATAs. The intake to the four years B.Tech degree course is 54 and the academic program is multi disciplinary in its approach. The members of the faculty are actively engaged in the R & D work and have large number of publications to their credit.

The discipline of Production Engineering aims at bringing optimum co-ordination among manufacturing processes, plant, manpower and managerial policies for maximum productivity with most economical input of capital as well human resources. College distinguished itself of being the first to introduce this branch in Asia in as early as 1955. At Production Engineering in B.I.T. Sindri, successively strive for matching world-class standards in pedagogy and providing the students one of the best careers in the field of R&D and industrial development.

The department has well equipped laboratories including Robotics and Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) laboratory.

4.Metallurgy:

Since 1956, B.I.T. Sindri has rich heritage of building and shaping world class metallurgists. Metallurgists of this department are consistently striving for the upliftment of the operative professors, interactive alumnus and enthusiastic students together comprise the metallurgical department. The alumni of this department are occupying top most positions in MNCs all over the world. Renowned metallurgists regularly visit the campus and metallurgical field.

5.Chemical:

The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in the year 1956. The department offers four years BSc(Engg) degree course with an annual intake of 40 students. One and a half year postgraduate program leading to MSc(Engg) with specialization in Petroleum Refinery Engineering and Chemical Plant Engineering, and one year program leading to Post Graduate Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering are also offered. The annual intake is 7 and 5 in MSc(Engg) and PG Diploma programs respectively. The department also renders consultancy services for tackling technical problems faced by neighboring industries.

The department has several well equipped laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The specialized laboratories include: Unit Operations Lab, Process Control Lab, Petroleum Refinery Engineering Lab, Plastic Technology Lab, Unit Process Engineering Lab etc.

6.Civil:

The Department of Civil Engineering was started in the year 1957.The department offers UG & PG courses with Soil mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Structural engineering as specialization. The department also offers adequate facilities for R&D work and thus provides a vital impetus in growth of the state. Both undergraduate and postgraduate are trained in computer applications of Civil Engineering and the latest softwares.The students of the department actively pursue R&D under the guidance of faculty members funded by state government.

7.Electronics

BIT SINDRI became a pioneering institution of India heralding country towards rapid development in Telecom, since 1957 (When this Deptt. was established). We have had eminent personalities in the faculty. The name was subsequently changed to E.C.E. Alumni have added feathers in the cap of BIT's rich history by making a mark in the industrial sphere. The students will strive to keep the lamp burning and follow the path to success.

8.Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started functioning in 1987. The first undergraduate batch rolled out in the year 1991.Currently the department has nearly 167 undergraduate students. Graduates from the department are recruited by both academia and industries. All over the world, ex-students of the Department occupy top positions in both academia and industries.

Administrative building

BIT Sindri is located on 400 acres (1.6 km²) of land in the industrial town of Sindri in Dhanbad district. Each branch has its own building and laboratories and each department has their own libraries and computer facilities.The college has a lush green campus .There are ten engineering departments in the college and each engineering department has its own building.BIT Sindri was the first college in Asia which introduced the course of Production Engineering.It has a wide spread campus of 440 acres.The whole and sole management of the college is done by Government of Jharkhand.A lot of cultural fests are organised in the college campus.In the session of 2014-2015 many celebrities had their performances in the college campus such as 'The Raeth band','Mohit Gupta','Divya Kumar' and the band'Under Ground Authority'.

The Sindri Town railway station is adjacent to the campus. There is a shuttle service between Sindri and Dhanbad four times a day. The other means of transportation from Dhanbad station to the campus are local taxis (also called trekkers), which have most hostels on their route.

SAEINDIA BIT SINDRI: SAEINDIA BIT SINDRI provide with the young budding talents an opportunity to design, develop, manufacture and test vehicles which operate on land. We as a Team, Participate in two of the major events organized by SAEINDIA namely BAJA & SUPRA. ROBOTICS is an integral part of SAEINDIA BIT SINDRI. We offer assistance to the fresher's to guide them in this field and equip them with adequate knowledge so that they can participate in various Technical events at Home Campus and elsewhere. In addition to that we also guide and encourage students to participate in technical workshops, seminars, technical symposiums, various paper presentations, projects & ongoing research works in field of latest automotive technology.

Inception: It was the March of 2010 when SAEINDIA BIT SINDRI chapter was formed with a vision of developing and sustaining a new Technical culture in BIT SINDRI.

Talking about the Achievements of SAEINDIA BIT SINDRI, Since it’s inception the society has a number of achievements to its name, some of them are enlisted here :

• Team wonders designed and manufactured an all terrain vehicle to take part in BAJA SAEINDIA 2011. This team won the 2nd prize in most safe vehicle award category. We received a trophy and a sum of Rs. 50,000/- as the prize. The 22 lap (21Km) endurance race was held on the 30th January, 2011. The track was more grueling than the BAJA track because of the steep inclines and dense slush.

• This team WONDER is the only team from Bihar and Jharkhand who been selected for the main event of BAJASAINDIA 2012.

• In the year 2012 we participated in the SUPRA SAE INDIA FORMULA RACING CAR event and up to dynamic stage.

We are also expecting similar ATV and free style formula car based events in the near future and are hoping to win those too. Members of this club also participate in various other technical events like robotics and paper publication, research, etc.

Some of the achievements of society members are :-

• 1st prize for submarine at IIT Kharagpur worth Rs 14,000.

• Preparation of a model of CNC drilling machine which won the 1st prize in the college.

• 1st prize for submarine at ISM.

• 2nd prize in cliff-capturer at ISM.

• 2nd and 3rd prize for autonomous robot at ISM.

• 1st prize in over-night bridge (model) making at IIT Guwahati.

• A certificate from Boeing recognizing efforts for radio controlled glider at IIT Kharagpur.

• Finalist in innovative paper presentation at IIT Kharagpur.

• 3rd prize in on spot robotics IIT Guwahati.

• members have not only flourished in the field of technical aspects, but have also proved their mettle in the academics by often becoming the Branch Toppers of their respective branches. Some have even gained the honor of becoming The Grand Topper of this Premier Institute of Jharkhand.

• Over the year SAE members are also involved in different research works and submitting Research Papers in various Seminars and Journals.

Prayaas India

Prayaas India is the shape given to efforts of the students of B.I.T. Sindri, Dhanbad who thought of the humanitarian aspects nurturing in their minds Prayaas India is a Non-Governmental Organisation which came into existence on April 10, 2008, starting with 10 volunteers and 25 children for providing free and quality education to underprivileged children living in slums and villages near college campuses. The management of the organization is handled by BIT Sindri students. Apart from two-hours evening tuitions to more than 500 children, they are admitted in good private schools for formal education.

Placements at BIT Sindri

BIT Sindri, the only government engineering college in the state, made a record of sorts in 2011 when the total number of students securing jobs through campus recruitment crossed the 500 mark. Institute students were delighted when the TCS announced to give annual scholarship of Rs 10,000 to the topper of computer science and engineering branch. In 2010, the total number of students who had secured job through campus placement drive was 468. For 2012 batch students,IT major Tata Consultancy Services offered jobs to 201 students. The students have been offered a salary package of up to Rs 3.8 lakh per annum. But still there is huge Craze of GATE in the Campus and people score well in GATE every year. BIT Sindri welcomes the best recruiters in India and abroad to its campus..

Academic Section: Academic Section of BIT, Sindri is responsible for student's admission, keeping their academic records updated as well as final award of degree to B.Tech., M.Tech. and Research Scholars of Ph.D. It prepares the academic calendar of BIT Sindri and monitors the academic progress. It also prepares and ensures the regular update of academic curriculum and syllabi. Further it is responsible of filling university examination forms and issuing admit cards for the examinations. It also coordinates the institute and university along with the examination section.
