The Basketball Champions League is an international basketball competition launched by FIBA, to be contested by European basketball clubs. The first tournament will start in September 2016, with the aim to rival with Euroleague Basketball.

Creation and adoption

In October 2015, FIBA attempted to take back the control of Europe's 1st tier club competition,[1][2] proposing a new competition format with 16 teams playing in a round-robin format, granting eight guaranteed spots to different clubs. When the top European clubs decided to abide with the same competition format, but keeping the organization within Euroleague Basketball,[3] FIBA announced the launching of a new European basketball club competition[4] with a qualification based in the sporting merit.[5]

Format

The regular season will be joined by 32 teams, 24 will qualify directly and the other eight will come from the qualifying rounds. These teams will be divided into four groups of eight teams. The four first qualified teams of each group will qualify to the play-offs while qualified teams in 5th and 6th position will be dropped to the FIBA Europe Cup.

In the play-offs, the Round of 16 play-offs and the Quarter-Final play-offs will be played with a double-leg format. Four teams will play the Final Four of the competition.[6]
