Bhadravati (formerly Bhandak) is a city and a municipal council in Chandrapur district in the state of Maharashtra, India. It lies 26 km from Chandrapur city. It has a major ordnance factory and several open-cast coal mines. There are about 20 villages in the taluka.

History

The Gavrala,a small hamlet near Bhadrawati, has been excavated by the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archeology, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur during 2006–07. They unearthed fortifications of the Vakataka period.

Landmarks

Temples in the area are Jain mandir, the Bodhha vastu of vijasan, Ganesh mandir of Gavrala. There is one ancient Jain temple dedicated to 23rd Jain Tirthankar Parshvanath known as "Kesariyaji Parshvanath" located in Bhadravati, known as JAIN MANDIR. The temple belongs to Shwetamber sect of Jain religion. A new temple is constructed behind the old Jain temple, is much bigger than the existing one. Also there are 2000 years old Buddhist caves, popularly known as Vijasan Tekdi. It is located at Vijasan village. These caves has hosted International Buddha Dhamma conventions. Several leaders and Monks of Buddha Dhamma from all over the world represent at the convention. Also this city is blessed with lord shiva as it has an ancient temple of "Bhadrashesh" popularly known as "Nagoba Mandir" or Nag Mandir. People from all around used to come here on Mahashivratri and Nag-Panchami.

The hilltop of Ganesh tekadi at Gavrala has a small Ganesh temple and its architecture and archeological remains refers the art of late ancient historic period.

Economy

Ordnance Factory is a major employer. This area is surrounded by open cast coal mines. There are mines at Majri, Chargaon, New Kunada, Telvasa, Dhorwasa. EMTA coalmines near Baranj is the newly established coal mine.and power plants like girish powers. Bhadravati has a very big market place (composed of grain and grocery stores, cloths and general shops, households appliances, specialized hospitals, medical stores, good hotels, etc.) serving the localities and nearby villages since a long time.

Transport

The city also has MSRTC Bus Stop and Railway Station known as 'Bhandak'. As it is located on Chandrapur-Nagpur Highway, it is well known for good transport facility.

Education

Bhadravati is well known for education facilities in the district. It has many schools, colleges, etc. Newly established Shri Sai College of Engineering and Technology is famous. Other schools and colleges are Dr. Ambedkar Memorial High School, N.S. College of Science, Fairyland school, Vivekanand College, Z.P. High School, Lokmanya Tilak School etc. St Anne's High School is a highly recognised school producing 100% results in board exam. Although Ordnance Factory High School (OFHS) and K.V.O.F. in defence colony are the oldest and most famous among them.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Bhadravati had a population of 56,679. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Bhadravati has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 84% and female literacy of 73%. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
