The House of Orange-Nassau are a line of the House of Nassau. Their founder William the Silent succeeded to the title of Prince of Orange in 1544. They have played a central role in the political life of the Netherlands since William organised the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule, which after the Eighty Years' War led to an independent Dutch state. They are also the royal family of the Netherlands since 1815.
