Ciampino is a town and comune in the province of Rome, Lazio, Italy. It was a frazione of Marino until 1974, when it became a comune; it obtained the city status (being therefore officially known as Città di Ciampino) in 2004 by presidential decree.

Overview

It is best known for the local "Giovan Battista Pastine" International Airport, best known as Rome Ciampino, a military airport which also hosts several civil flights, especially from low-cost companies such as Ryanair. The city is named after Giovanni Giustino Ciampini, a religious, scientist and archaeologist who lived here in the 17th century. It grew from 5,000 inhabitants in 1951 to 28,000 in 1971. Today, the city has circa 37,000 inhabitants.

Climate

According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Ciampino has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps.[1] The city's climate is basically Mediterranean type, but there are rare continental peaks, especially in winter. The autumn and spring seasons are particularly rainy and with mild temperatures. The winters, which are also characterized by discrete rainfall, alternating periods relatively mild to others that have cold conditions very prominent, especially in the presence of high pressure with cold winds from the eastern or northern states that the phenomenon of temperature inversion are often the temperatures fall below 0 °C (32 °F), with minimum down to −5 °C (23 °F), and occasionally even lower. Snow is a very rare phenomenon: they are mostly timid sleet or downpour of graupel. The summer is very hot, humid and potentially drought. In general, the weather is often windy, with a prevalence of northerly winds, such as the north wind and the north-east, and west, as the mistral, the south-west and the west wind, the latter so called because from the area to the west that is the vast plain of the Roman stretching right in front of Ciampino. The annual rainfall ranging around 800 millimetres (31 in) Ciampino lying at the foot of the northern slopes of the Alban Hills where there is a phenomenon called orographic lift, which is the reduction of water vapor in the clouds as the ground rises. Therefore, the increased rainfall will have on the foothills of the hills, facing the sea, towards the south-west, and the younger to the north. In the summer, in conditions of intense heat waves particularly, the temperature can reach up to 40 °C (104 °F).
