Deepak Thakur Sonkhla (popularly known as Deepak Thakur) is a field hockey forward on the Indian team.
Family
Thakur's father Nardev Singh is an ex-serviceman and his mother Lalita Thakur is a house-wife. His younger sister Navita Thakur is a national badminton player.
Career
Junior level
Thakur became popular after helping India win the Junior World Cup Hockey Tournament in 2001 in Hobart, Australia. He scored a double hat-trick in the tournament. He made a notable play in the final against an unpredictable Argentinian team, with the score board showing 6-1.[1] Another notable play was made against the underdog, Scotland, with a score of 7-1, a rout.
Senior level
Thakur debuted for the Men's National Team in June 1999 against Germany. He was part of the national squad in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and again in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Awards
Thakur received the Arjuna Award in 2004 for his performance in Indian hockey.[2]
