Ethnic groups [2]

Ethnic Melanesians known as Kanak constitute 40% of the population in 2009, followed by Europeans with 29%. The Europeans are the largest ethnic group in the province Sud (South), while Kanak are the majority in the other provinces. There is also a large minority from other Polynesian islands, mainly from Wallis and Futana (9%), but also from Tahiti (2%) and Vanuatu (1%). The remainder of the population (19%) is mainly from Asian countries.
