The Department of Education and Training is a department of the Queensland Government. The Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Kate Jones, and the Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Minister for Training and Skills, Yvette D'Ath, are jointly responsible for the department.

The department's offices are located at 30 Mary Street, Brisbane.

History

The department has been formerly known as the Department of Public Instruction and the Department of Education.

Functions

The Department of Education and Training is primarily concerned with early childhood education, student and school performance, implementation of the curriculum, training and skilling workers, improving literacy and numeracy as well as policy development. The Department also worked previously to implement the Building the Education Revolution scheme.[1]

Fees

Queensland has one of the most generous school fee exemption schemes in Australia. Following a 2011 review the department has decided to limit fee exemptions for international students only to the children of students studying for doctorates or on AusAID or defence scholarships.[2]

iPad trials

The department trialed the use of iPads at primary and secondary schools in October 2010 to test compatibility with the existing network.[3]
