Summary

1927: the board of Rockland Trust Company, a bank in Rockland, Massachusetts, celebrates (with a stuffed kangaroo at the table) after winning approval to open a branch in Hull, Massachusetts. The bank's petition to open the branch sparked a state-wide debate over whether to allow "kangaroo banking" (opening branches in non-adjacent towns) The proposal was opposed by Alvin T. Fuller, then Governor of Massachusetts, and Hingham Trust, a bank based closer to Hull. The petition was finally granted by the Massachusetts legislature.
