Summary
The shoulder sleeve insignia utilized by the 39th Infantry Division during World War I. The Greek symbols for Delta were utilized to represent the Division as the "Delta" Division because its troops were drawn from the states that make up the Mississippi Delta, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. Several sources state that this patch was not approved by the American Expeditionary Forces Commander, General Pershing, but the patch is clearly visible in several photographs of division members from the time period.
