Summary

St. Michael and the Virgin. English, 15th century. Pembroke College Chapel, Cambridge, England (UK). "Last judgment. An alabaster image of St Michael weighing souls, while the Virgin Mary, protecting a soul beneath her cloak, lays her rosary on the scale to weight it in favour of a good soul, while to the right a devil tries to pull down the ugly and bad soul. Dramatizing as a focus for devout meditation the Virgin Mary's key intercession at the moment when the individual soul is judged on the scale for all eternity, this alabaster was probably produced in Nottingham in the 15th century."
