This photograph, taken a few seconds after the accident, shows the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_main_engine" class="extiw" title="w:Space Shuttle main engine">Space Shuttle Main Engines</a> and Solid Rocket Booster exhaust plumes entwined around a ball of gas from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_external_tank" class="extiw" title="w:Space Shuttle external tank">External Tank</a>.
