Summary

Illustration of the rood screen at St Mary's church, Charlton-on-Otmoor, Oxfordshire, with two foliage-covered garlands in place of figures in the rood loft. The figures used to be redecorated and carried in procession around the village on May Day, accompanied by morris dancers. Only one garland, more solid and cross-like, exists today; it is redecorated on May Day and September 19 (the patronal festival calculated by the Julian Calendar).
