Summary

The Holy of Holies or Sanctuary. Abu Simbel, Egypt

The most sacred place, the Holy of Holies or Sanctuary. Four seated statues of Re-Horakhty, the deified Rameses II, Amun-re and Ptah are carved from the rock of the back wall. A pedestal still remains in the sanctuary on which the sacred barque would have stood. Twice each year, on February 22 and October 22, the rays of the sun come in through the front entrance and travel straight back through the temple until they reach the inner sanctuary, where they illuminate the faces of the rock -cut statues of Amun, Re-Horakhti, and Rameses II for a full twenty minutes. The face of Ptah , who is god of the Underworld, remains in darkness.
