Summary

The Smith/Ninth Street station at the IND Culver Line is on top of this bridge over the Gowanus Canal. The bridge is so high that it does not need to open to let ships pass, though the 9th Street bridge below must.
Although the next station in both directions lead to (almost-)underground stations and the ramps on both sides look rather steep, the slope is quite gentle. Digging a tunnel beneath the canal would have meant higher costs and a steeper incline on both sides.
