The word is found in the first line of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkhon_Inscriptions" class="extiw" title="w:Orkhon Inscriptions">Kul tegin inscription</a> (8th century).
The <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://irq.kaznpu.kz/?lang=e&mod=1&tid=1&oid=15&m=1">kaznpu.kz</a> website (Language Committee of Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan) gives the beginning of the inscription as follows: (this has not been verified with published literature)
- transcription: UZAG²UG² : T²NGR²I : S¹R¹A : Y¹G¹Z : Y²R² : QIL¹NTQUD¹A
- interpretation: Öze Kök Teŋіri asïra yaγïz Jer qïlïntaquda ...
- translation: "When the blue sky above and the brown earth below were created ..."
(note, the numerals ¹ and ² in the above transcription scheme indicate back and front vowels, respectively, intrinsic in the consonant signs)
