The bronze <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equestrian_statue" class="extiw" title="en:Equestrian statue">equestrian statue</a> was sculpted by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Quincy_Adams_Ward" class="extiw" title="en:John Quincy Adams Ward">John Quincy Adams Ward</a>, and dedicated on November 19, 1879. It is one of seventeen Civil War monuments in Washington, D.C., that were collectively listed on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places" class="extiw" title="en:National Register of Historic Places">National Register of Historic Places</a> on September 20, 1978. The statuary was also designated a D.C. Historic Landmark on March 3, 1979.
