Followers of the Yoruba religion believe that Ìyá Nlá, or "the Great Mother", is a communal spiritual force that gives them access to both the Forces of Nature and the wisdom of their ancestors. They believe that this Orisha is the source of life, and that its principal purpose is the keeping of social harmony. They believe that dedicated followers will gain "Iwapele", giving them a connection to their first ancestors. According to their beliefs, Ìyá Àjé is able to cure, curse, or cause retributive justice on anyone who disrespects motherhood.[1]
