Jerry A. DeLoach (born July 17, 1977 in Sacramento, California) is a former American football defensive end for the Washington Redskins and the Houston Texans of the National Football League.

Early life

In high school, he played both ways at Valley HS in Sacramento, California, where he recorded 77 tackles, including eight sacks. His senior year, he earned first team Delta League, all-city and All-Northern California honors and helped lead his team from a 0-10 record his junior season to a 9-3 mark as a senior in '94. In addition to being a star football player, he lettered in basketball all four years and was elected to come to Cal after considering UCLA, Colorado State and Oregon State. Not only was he an excellent athlete, he was an excellent student who came to Cal with a 3.8 GPA, receiving the Scholar-Athlete Award from the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and the California Legislative Sports Award as a scholar-athlete. He is former varsity basketball teammates with US Olympic High Jumper, Jaime Nieto.

College career

A player with enormous potential, as few have his combination of size and athletic ability...could emerge as one of the top defensive tackles in all of college football ... rated the No. 5 defensive tackle in the nation by The Sporting News (he's ranked No. 8 DT nationally by Lindy's) ... usually attracts the attention of at least two blockers, but still manages to make a lot of plays...sat out spring drills rehabilitating a sprained knee that was injured late last season...is one of Cal's most experienced players, starting 23 games over the last three seasons...pro scouts project him as a high draft pick if he continues to develop...has great leg strength (635-pound squat press, which ties for the third-best total in Cal history) and has excellent pass-rushing skills. He played in the East West Shrine Game as well as the Senior Bowl in 2000. Also was invited to the NFL combine.

1995

DeLoach redshirted his first year at Cal while serving on the scout team.

1996

DeLoach showed signs of future greatness, moving into the starting lineup in the last half of the 1996 season as a redshirt-freshman...played in all 12 games for the Bears and ended the year with 45 tackles (38 in the regular-season), including four sacks among six tackles behind the line of scrimmage (minus 24 yards)...started five games at tackle (UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon and Navy)...had an important fumble recovery early in the fourth quarter against Nevada, helping stop a Wolf Pack drive and protect an 8-point Cal lead...had an 11-yard sack at Washington State, helping him earn a starting spot the next week vs. UCLA...enjoyed a fruitful starting debut with six tackles (four unassisted) vs. the Bruins, including two stops behind the line of scrimmage (minus seven yards), one being a 4-yard sack of Cade McNown...also had six tackles at Oregon...concluded his freshman season with seven unassisted tackles against Navy in the Aloha Bowl.

1997

DeLoach began his sophomore season at defensive end, but made the move to the inside at Washington State...had 22 tackles on the year, including 16 unassisted stops...ranked second among Cal's defensive tackles with five tackles for loss...had a pair of stops behind the line for minus 10 yards against Oklahoma...strained a calf muscle at WSU and had to sit out the next week against UCLA.

1998

DeLoach was a major force on the interior line and clearly earned the respect of coaches around the league who voted him second team All-Pac-10...ended the season with 8 tackles behind the line of scrimmage (including a pair of sacks for minus 26 yards) despite missing all but one play of the final three games of the season...suffered a knee sprain on a low block on the first play of the Arizona State game and was sidelined for the remainder of the season...finished the year with 31 tackles, including 19 unassisted stops...had several dominant games, including 6 tackles (2 for loss) at Washington...had a 14-yard sack of UCLA QB Cade McNown and forced a fumble on the play, which Jacob Waasdorp recovered at the Bruin 2-yard-line, to set up a Cal TD for a 7-0 lead...also had a 12-yard sack in the Nebraska game...made a key interception at Oregon State, picking off a deflected pass to stop a Beaver drive in Cal territory in the third quarter with the Bears trailing by two points, returning the ball 11 yards to near midfield.

PRO: Powerful and versatile lineman who has been a mainstay along Houston's defensive line for four seasons…has averaged 73 tackles per season as a Texan…full-time starter for two seasons before giving way to Robaire Smith in 2004…acquired by Houston in a trade with Washington for QB Danny Wuerffel on 3/4/02 – the first trade in franchise history…originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Washington on 4/27/00.
