John Hardin High School is a school located in Radcliff, Kentucky[2] but served by the post office of neighboring Elizabethtown. Established in 2001, the school is named after the Revolutionary War officer and Native American fighter, John Hardin.
Contents
Education system
The school runs on "block" scheduling; there are five 70 minute blocks of class a day. Students are required to receive 26 credits before graduation. The exact credits required vary depending on the desired diploma: the Commonwealth Diploma, the highest and most difficult to achieve, the Academic Studies diploma (second highest), and the Regular Studies diploma. The classes rotate every trimester, 12 weeks.
Wednesday schedule
The schedule is set up so students attend an extra class every Wednesday. On the first Wednesday of each month, students attend a "huddle" class, where they are informed of their grades and any other important announcements. On the other three Wednesdays, the students report to an "enrichment", which they picked themselves the previous school year. Huddle/Enrichment lasts an hour, and because it is in the middle of the day, lunch is pushed back nearly half an hour and regular classes are shortened to accommodate the extra class.
Performing Arts Center (the PAC)
The Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center (the PAC) serves the entire Hardin County district and is operated separately from John Hardin High School. It serves over 30,000 students annually with its educational programming and over 10,000 Hardin Countians through locally produced and national touring productions.
Sports
John Hardin has high-achieving marching band and sports programs. The football team reached its first-ever state championship game in 2009. After losing to Fort Thomas Highlands in the Class 5-A title game, the Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 14-1. John Hardin's golf team was dominant in the 5th Region and a contender on the state level from 2005-2009. The swim team at John Hardin has made several trips to the State Championships in both relays and individual events.
Principal turnover
John Hardin High School has experienced high principal turnover since the mid-2000s. Brent Holsclaw was the school's first principal. In 2005 Brent Holsclaw left to take the superintendent's job in Bardstown, Kentucky. Bryan Todd was named the interim principal for the 2005-2006 school year. He was replaced by Alvin Garrison, who left in 2013 to become the superintendent of Covington Independent Schools. Lynne Gibson was named principal for the 2013-2014 school year.
Bill Clinton visits John Hardin
Former president Bill Clinton visited John Hardin High School on May 19, 2008 to campaign for his wife, Hillary Clinton in the 2008 democratic primary election. He met John Hardin Principal Alvin Garrison, and other members of the John Hardin staff such as Gregory Cecil, and valedictorian, Will Chadwick before delivering his speech. The event took place at 7:30 p.m and was open to the public.[3]
