Laidlaw College, formerly known as Bible College of New Zealand (BCNZ), Laidlaw College is the largest interdenominational Christian College in Aotearoa New Zealand, offering qualifications from certificate to doctoral level, in the areas of theology and biblical studies, mission, ministry, counselling and teacher education. They provide a dynamic learning environment for students throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world, with two campuses in Auckland, one in Christchurch and great distance learning opportunities too.[1]

Laidlaw College has at its core a deep commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ to which the Bible bears witness and to an encounter with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as we learn together. Their programmes bridge the gap between faithful reflection on God and a deep engagement with the world.

College life is relational and community oriented and the College is committed to seeing their students flourish academically, socially and through encounter with God and others. Laidlaw College reflects and celebrates the cultural diversity of Aotearoa New Zealand and its bicultural heritage.

History

Laidlaw College was founded in 1922 by Reverend Joseph Kemp and businessman Robert Laidlaw. Originally known as the Bible Training Institute (BTI), the College trained men and women in the Scriptures and theology. In 1972 the Institute was renamed the Bible College of New Zealand (BCNZ). The College has continued training men and women for work in the fields of pastoral ministry and mission but has also equipped its students for leadership and service in a broad range of roles across society.[2]

In 2005 the College appointed Dr Mark Strom as National Principal/CEO with a mandate to clarify the College's vision and purpose and deepen its capacity to inspire and educate men and women for leadership and influence within the churches and society of Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.

In September 2010, Dr Rod Thompson was appointed National Principal/CEO and has led the College through its most recent phase of strengthening and growth.

In January 2016, Dr Stephen Garner (Head of School – Theology) and Nigel Smith (Head of School – Social Practice) were jointly appointed co-chairs of the Senior Leadership Team and will lead the College throughout 2016.

Campuses

Laidlaw College has campuses in Auckland (Henderson and Manukau) and in Christchurch – as well as Distance Learning options, that together offer students a great deal of flexibility in how they structure their study. Many students mix it up, choosing a combination of on-campus and distance courses to complete their programme of study.

The Henderson Campus is situated in West Auckland with the Waitakere Ranges and west coast beaches close by and a sports stadium across the road. Students enjoy vibrant community life supported by purpose-built facilities, student accommodation, well-equipped lecture rooms, an extensive and well-resourced library and a lively café.

The Manukau Campus is an exciting new addition to Laidlaw College and makes it possible for Auckland students who can’t get out West to access all of our programmes, as well as onsite tutorials, resources and academic support. Conveniently located close to public transport in the heart of Manukau, this vibrant, high quality, intercultural campus has lots of character and great spaces for community to form.

The Christchurch Campus sits in the western suburbs of Papanui, in a custom-designed building that celebrates learning, community and creativity. The smaller campus and class sizes make study at this campus relationally rich, supported by a great library and a comfortable café area where students and staff can take a break or work together in small groups.
