There are ten airports in the Greater Toronto Area. Pearson, Waterloo, Billy Bishop and Hamilton have scheduled passenger service; however, the vast majority of passenger traffic goes through Toronto's Pearson International Airport, which is Canada's busiest airport and the country's major hub. Waterloo is a growing passenger service airport with a very active GA and training population. Billy Bishop is used for civil aviation, air ambulance traffic and regional scheduled airlines. Buttonville formerly had scheduled passenger service from Ottawa operated by Bearskin Airlines, but it has been discontinued. Hamilton acts as an alternative to Pearson and is popular with charters and discount airlines who want to avoid fees at Pearson, which is among the world's most expensive airports.[1] YTO is a multiple airport code that works for Pearson, Waterloo, Hamilton, Billy Bishop, and Buttonville.

Proposed airports

There was proposal to develop a new, Pickering Airport northeast of the city, to complement Pearson on the west side of Toronto.[2] Versions of these tentative plans have been in existence since the early 1970s, and land for this proposed airport was expropriated by governmental authorities in 1972. However, continued and vociferous local opposition to the Pickering airport scheme has meant that nearly forty years later the airport was always in the discussion phase. That changed in June 2013 when the federal government announced the revival of the airport, but development is not expected to take place until 2027 to 2037.[3]
