Mankhurd is a suburb in eastern Mumbai, India. Mankhurd railway station is on the Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Geography

The township lies on the Harbour Line and is the last stop in the city before Navi Mumbai.[1] After Mankhurd, trains cross the Vashi Bridge before reaching Vashi, in Navi Mumbai. Mankhurd also has a railway line run by the Bombay Port Trust.

Unlike many of the railway stations in Mumbai, which have 'east' and 'west' sides, this station has a 'north' and 'south' side on either side of the railway track. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre's employee township "Anushakti Nagar", Naval Employee's Township, Mandala and Trombay are some nearby accessible places from the south side of this train station and P.M.G.P. Colony, Mohite-Patil Nagar, Sonapur, Mandala are some nearby accessible places from North side. BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) public buses serve this station. Metered and non-metered auto rickshaws are common sight outside the station. There is a civil colony- SPDC Colony located about 2 kilometres away from the station road.

The Mankhurd suburb is part of and the easternmost boundary of the municipal ward M-East.[2]

Local Officials

The ruling MLA is Abu Azmi who is from the Samajwadi party.

Government Institutions

The Navjivan Sudhar Kendra (aka Navjivan Mahila Vustigruh) is a shelter for rescued women (women rescued by the police during raids in bars and brothels). The inmates are sheltered here pending the resolution of their respective cases in civil and criminal courts. This institution has been in the news recently when 17 inmates escaped from the shelter.[3] In the subsequent investigation by both government and media agencies, the administration of the shelter has been thoroughly criticised. A report by a Mumbai High Court appointed committee calls it "a living hell".[4]

There are five children's homes run jointly by the government and NGOs. The Chembur Children's Home was established in 1939.[5] The Home for Mentally Deficient Children was established in 1941.[6] There are two observation homes set up in 1960[7] and 1974[8] with the purpose of sheltering rescued children - who have run away, have been employed as child labour, victims of disasters, broken homes, etc. Finally there is the Bal Kalyan Nagari which was established in 1975 for the same reason.[9]

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education is also located in Mankhurd.

Cleanliness issues

The surrounding region near the creek is covered by acres of mangrove swamps. A comprehensive clean-up operation was undertaken by councillor Chiragkumar Brahamabhatt.
