Marguerite Brésil (19 August 1880 – 1 February 1961) was a French actress of theater and cinema during the silent film period.[1]

Biography

Marguerite Brésil was born in Sermaises, a commune in the Loiret department, the daughter of Léon Brésil (1850–1919), journalist at the Figaro and granddaughter of the actor and playwright Jules Brésil (1818–1899).

In 1899 she made her stage debut in Paris in Petit Chagrin.[1] She performed in all the major theaters of Paris, and played the title role in Zaza,[1] the play by Pierre Berton and Charles Simon — created for the Théâtre du Vaudeville, in May 1898 — during a revival of the play.

Pictures of her appeared on Belle Époque postcards, and she popularized the Recamier hairstyle.[2][3]

Marguerite Brésil died at the 16th arrondissement of Paris and was buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery (7th division).
