Marymount California University is an independent, Catholic, coeducational, and residential university offering a liberal arts program that leads to associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and graduate degrees.[2] Situated along the coastline of Rancho Palos Verdes, California,[3] The institution is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.[4] The campus occupies 26 acres (11 ha) overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) to the south of Los Angeles, California.[5]

History

In 1968, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) established the Marymount California University institution of higher education.

In 1975, the RSHM transferred responsibility for the University to a lay board of trustees.[2]

In 1986, the college changed its name from Marymount Palos Verdes College to Marymount College.

In summer 2011, Marymount California University opened the Waterfront Campus in San Pedro, Los Angeles.[6]

On Friday, March 29, 2013, Marymount College announced that it was changing its name to Marymount California University (MCU) to "reflect the gradual transformation of the 45-year-old institution of higher education to a future multisite institution with undergraduate and graduate programs." [5]

Campuses

The Oceanview Campus, or main campus, encompasses 26-acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island in Rancho Palos Verdes.[7]

The Waterfront Campus encompasses the first floor of the former Northrop Grumman facility at 222 W. Sixth St., which will be transformed into classroom space and offices to accommodate upper division business majors and students majoring in global studies. Student performance and university events also take place at the Warner Grand Theatre and at the Grand Annex on the 400 block of West Sixth Street. Student artists show work in the gallery space at the historic Arcade Building as well as on West Sixth Street.

Residential Communities include the San Pedro Residential Campus, which is composed of two-story townhouse-style units that can accommodate approximately 400 students and staff,[8] and Pacific View Apartments, which is composed of 30 units for approximately 90 upper class students and staff.[9]

In 2013, Marymount California University opened the Lakeside campus in Lake County, California in the town of Lucerne overlooking Clear Lake in what had been the Lucerne Hotel.

Marymount California University is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.[10] Marymount California University offers the following undergraduate degree programs:[11]

Athletics

Marymount California University teams, nicknamed the Mariners, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and compete in the California Pacific Conference (CalPac).[14]

Men's and women's sports include cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer and track.[15]
