MasterChef Junior is an American cooking competition television series that is airing on Fox. It premiered on Friday, September 27, 2013.[1] It is based on the format of the U.K. series Junior MasterChef.[2]

On March 5, 2014, MasterChef Junior was renewed for a third season, before production on season two began.[3] The second season premiered on November 4, 2014.[4] The third season premiered on January 6, 2015.[5] The fourth season premiered on November 6, 2015.[6]

Format

Children between ages eight and thirteen apply to become a contestant on the series. Twenty-four applicants are chosen to audition.[2] At the auditions, the applicants are split into 3 groups. One group prepares seafood dishes, one prepares pasta dishes and one group prepares dessert dishes to present to the judges.[7] Twelve of the applicants become contestants for the next round and all twenty-four receive one of the Masterchef franchise's signature aprons that they get to keep, regardless of their progress.[7]

After the audition round, 2 contestants are sent home per episode. The winner receives a prize of $100,000[7] and the Junior Masterchef trophy.

Cast

Like its adult counterpart, Junior Masterchef is judged by Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot.[2] Bastianich didn't return for the show's fourth season, being replaced by pastry chef Christina Tosi.[17] Elliot won't return for the show's fifth season, being replaced by Aaron Sanchez.

Production

Fox placed casting calls for participants in January 2013.[18] Fox officially ordered the series (then under the name Masterchef Junior) on May 10, 2013.[19] The name was later changed to Junior Masterchef. There were concerns that Ramsay's style of cursing at the contestants on his other competition shows (most notably Hell's Kitchen and the adult Masterchef) would carry over to Junior Masterchef. It didn't. One contestant (named Gavin) said that Ramsay had only cursed twice during the production of the series and never at the contestants. In the final editing, he cursed once in front of (but not at) the contestants.[7]
