Matthew Thomas Coles (born 26 May 1990) is an English cricketer. He is a fast-medium bowler and left-handed batsman,[1] He plays for Kent and has represented England Lions.

Coles made his first-class debut for Kent County Cricket Club in their match against Loughborough University Centre of Cricketing Excellence on 15 April 2009.[2] He had also played for Kent at under-13, under-15 and under-17 levels.[3] Coles reached his maiden first-class century against Yorkshire by hitting a reverse sweep for six.[4] He was awarded a county cap in August 2012.[5]

He took 59 first-class wickets during the 2012 season which saw him called up to the England Lions squad and was included in their tour of Australia in 2013. Unfortunately, he was sent home early from the tour for drinking beyond curfew hours more than once with Ben Stokes.[6]

On 27 August 2013, Coles signed on loan for Hampshire until the end of the season.[7] In Hampshire's last game of the season against Essex, Coles took match figures of 10–154, which prompted Hampshire into signing Coles in a 3-year deal.[8]

He returned to Kent in March 2015 after his release from Hampshire, taking 100 wickets in all formats for the county in the 2015 season.[9] Coles won the Kent Player of the Year award at the end of the season,[10] and was chosen in the Professional Cricketers' Association Team of 2015 in September 2015.[9] He was nominated as part of a four man shortlist as PCA Player of the Year.[11] During the season, Coles scored a century against Surrey at The Oval in the Royal London One-Day Cup quarter final,[12] took ten wickets in the County Championship match against Leicestershire[13] and took a hat-trick against Nottinghamshire in the One-Day Cup.[14]
