Matthew G. Whitaker (born October 29, 1969 in Des Moines, Iowa) is a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. He was appointed June 15, 2004 by President George W. Bush. Whitaker resigned in November 2009 following the appointment and confirmation of Nicholas A. Klinefledt, who was appointed by President Barack Obama.[1][2][3]
Whitaker graduated with an Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa. While at Iowa, Whitaker played tight end for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes football team, appearing in Iowa's most recent Rose Bowl game in 1991.[2][4]
Whitaker, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully for Treasurer of Iowa in 2002, losing to incumbent Democrat Michael Fitzgerald by 55% to 43%,[5] and was a candidate for the United States Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Tom Harkin in 2014.[6] He came fourth in the Republican primary, with 11,909 votes (7.54%).
Matthew is currently a managing partner of Des Moines based law firm, Whitaker Hagenow & Gustoff LLP. He also sits on the advisory board for World Patent Marketing, a patent assistance organization based out of Miami, FL.
Whitaker is also Executive Director of The Foundation for Accountability & Civic Trust (FACT), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that claims to be dedicated to promoting accountability, ethics, and transparency in government and civic arenas. The news section on the web site indicates that this organization rather is a badly executed attempt to use astroturfing to try to hide a partisan attack on Hillary Clinton and other representatives from the Democratic party.[7] The group is backed by presumably wealthy, anonymous, conservative donors.[8]
