Musiri is a Panchayat town in the Tiruchirappalli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It has an average elevation of 82 metres (269 feet).

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[1] Musiri had a population of 60290. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Musiri has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 69%. In Musiri, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The original name of this town was "Musukundapuri", named after a Chola king Musukundan. This is apparent from the devotional song composed on the local Vishnu deity in Agrahaaram (area where Brahmins live).

Other temples include Chandra Mauleeswara (Shiva) temple, Angaalamman temple, three Maariyamman temples apart from a church and a masjid.

Agriculture is the main occupation in this town situated on the northern bank of Kaveri river. The crops include paddy, sugar cane, banana and vegetables. Korai grass(Reed) mat/Chatai mat weaving is done here.[2]

The town is connected to Kulithalai town by a 1.45 km long bridge across river Kaveri. Vellore is nearby village to Musiri and has Sivan temple, Lord amman temple, Perumal temple and sellaiye sedachaiyae temple considered to be lord saving village.

Musiri is a separate assembly constituency falling under Perambalur Parliamentary constituency. It is a Taluk and Revenue Division headquarters in Tiruchirappalli District of Tamil Nadu state in India.
