mxmtoon (/ɛmɛksɛmtuːn/ EM-ex-EM-toon;[5] July 9,[6] 2000[7]) also known as Maia[1] is a pseudonymous singer-songwriter, social media personality and YouTuber from Bay Area, California. As of July 2019, her YouTube channel has approximately over 11 million total video views and 335 thousand subscribers.[8] She has over 770 thousand followers and 21 million likes on the video sharing platform TikTok[9] and has had her music has streamed over 150 million times across all online platforms collectively.[7] Known for singing and playing the ukulele, her fame escalated after releasing "Falling for U" (2017), a lo-fi produced song that has over 40 million streams on Spotify.[10]
In 2018, she released her debut EP plum blossom which gained more than 100 million streams on Spotify alone.[11] In May 2019, mxmtoon announced her debut album the masquerade which is scheduled to release on September 17, 2019.[12]
Personal life
Maia was born mixed Chinese-American to immigrant parents in Oakland, California.[11] She became interested in music from a young age and had played the classical cello, violin, trumpet and guitar before joining a rock band in fifth grade.[2][13] Maia identifies as bisexual,[14] and currently lives in Bay Area, California where she writes, records and produces her own music from the guest room of her parent's home.[15]
Career
Maia started her YouTube channel and began playing the ukulele in middle school. She was instantly fascinated by the instrument.[13][10] She began recording songs such as feelings are fatal that embodied her emotions and feelings after attempting to write comedy songs.[13]<templatestyles src="Template:Quote_box/styles.css" />
I can be as ridiculous as I want but I can also be an emo teenager and people like both sides.
—Mxmtoon, 2017 interview with Foundations[13]
One of her earliest singles "i feel like chet" was an ode to one of her favourite jazz musicians, Chet Baker.[16] After releasing plum blossom, mxmtoon received praise from the likes of Earmilk, i-D and Hypebeast.[17] One of Maia's newest singles, "prom dress', is inspired by experiences from her own big night and deals with social anxiety and the problems that come with being a teen in modern society.[18] The song has been streamed over 8 million times on Spotify and has been used in 50,000 videos on TikTok.[7][10]
Touring
In November 2018, mxmtoon announced her "plum blossom tour".[19] Tickets sold out quickly for the March 2019 tour in which she traveled and performed around the US with the likes of Khai Dreams as an opening act.[17][20] mxmtoon is yet to tour half of the US as well as Canada and Europe for her upcoming masquerade tour that will follow the release of her debut album.[11]
mxmtoon is yet to support Cavetown on a tour across the UK in December 2019.[7][21]
