Identity Evropa was an American identitarian[3] group established in March 2016.[4][5]
Identity Evropa was seen as one of several groups who contributed to the rapid growth of white nationalism in the U.S. since 2015.[6][7][8]
Contents
History
The organization's founder, Nathan Damigo, was a self-described member of the identitarian movement.[8] Damigo grew up in San Jose, California,[8] and was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 2004 to 2007.[4]
In the aftermath of the Unite the Right rally, leadership passed to Elliot Kline, aka "Eli Mosley". Members of the group participated in the planning for the October 19, 2017 speech by Richard B. Spencer at the University of Florida, where Mosley also spoke. Less than three months after Mosley assumed leadership, the position passed to Patrick Casey, who was the last executive director of IE.
On 10 March 2019 Patrick Casey announced the dissolution of the group, citing "baggage accumulated before my tenure" and announcing the creation of a new group with similar but broader goals, the American Identity Movement.[9][10]
Views
Only those "of European, non-Semitic heritage" were permitted to join the group.[4] The organization sought to "create a better world for people of European heritage – particularly in America – by peacefully effecting cultural change." [11] The group did not espouse any particular form of economic or political organization. [12] The group also rejected the label of white supremacist. They stated "that all ethnic and racial groups should have somewhere in the world to call home – a place wherein they can fully express themselves and enjoy self-determination." [13]
Damigo claimed that "Jewish power, Jewish influence" has "been extraordinarily negative for people of European heritage".[14]
Activities
Identity Evropa focused on two main activities, "activism and social networking." [15] The group engaged in activism on college campuses,[6] by distributing slogans on fliers, posters, and stickers.[14][4][5] Identity Evropa's activism also included placing fliers in high traffic areas and banner drops over bridges. [16] The organization held its first national conference on March 9-11, 2018, on the theme of “Leading our People Forward 2018.” [17]
