The Nordic Resistance Movement (Swedish: Nordiska Motståndsrörelsen), also known as the NMR, is a Scandinavian National Socialist[1] organisation and political party led by Simon Lindberg[2] headquartered in Sweden but operating in each of the Scandinavian countries. The organization also previously operated in Finland, but its Finnish branch was banned in 2019.

The organisation is known for its opposition to "International Jewry", Antifa and non-white immigration to the Nordic regions. According to the Swedish Security Service, their Swedish branch is a National Socialist group that represents a serious threat to Sweden's internal security.[3] They're also considered a central actor in Sweden's white power movement.[4]

Origin

The organisation was founded in December 1997 by individuals working with Folktribunen, the neo-National Socialist magazine, and members of National Youth and White Aryan Resistance, the now discontinued far-right organisation.[5] It was known then as the Swedish Resistance Movement but re-branded itself as as more countries were added to its operational scope.

Platform

The Nordic Resistance Movement officially operates on a nine-point manifesto espousing anti-immigrant, racial nationalist, anti-Zionist, and environmentalist views. It also sets an agenda for the establishment of a National Socialist government in the Nordic countries.[6]

Operations

Principle tactics include the distribution of leaflets, making public speeches in inner-city areas, and conducting targeted vandalism. Their camps in the Swedish woods have led some people to believe that they are training for a civil war or a revolution, although all such claims have been publicly rejected by the organisation.

They also publish the Nationellt Motstånd magazine.

Kärrtorp incident

On 15 December 2013, 30 to 40 members of the Swedish Resistance Movement interrupted an anti-racist demonstration in Kärrtorp, a suburb of Stockholm. The activist network Linje 17, named after the subway line that passes through Kärrtorp, organized the demonstration after Nazi symbols had been painted in several locations. The resulting clashes left several injured, including two police officers.[7][8] In late April 2014, a demonstrator who stabbed an SRM member with a knife during the clash was convicted and given a six-year prison sentence.[9] Seven alleged SRM members involved were also sentenced to six to eight months imprisonment.[10]

Organisation

The Nordic Resistance Movement is organised in two parts, a leader and a national organisation managed by a leadership council. They operate several so-called "nests" made up of clandestine cells used to execute objectives such as the spread of propaganda. Branches of the organisation include the Finnish Resistance Movement, Norwegian Resistance Movement, and Danish Resistance Movement in Finland, Norway, and Denmark respectively.

Leadership

The leader of the organisation is Simon Lindberg but several members share prominent roles including former leader and founder Klas Lund, legal spokesman Pär Öberg, and editor-in-chief of their Nordfront publication Fredrik Vejdeland.[11] In November 2003 the Swedish Security Service raided homes of leading members, among them was Klas Lund himself, who was later sentenced to four months imprisonment for possession of an illegal firearm.[12]

Youth organisation

Nationell Ungdom was the youth organisation of the Swedish Resistance Movement. However, in May 2006 it was announced that the youth organisation was being disbanded and all its members and activities would now become part of the main organisation. The main reason given was that "no youth organisation has ever made any revolutionary changes in society" and that it would be better if the young recruits were groomed as adults.

Finnish Resistance Movement branch

The Finnish Resistance Movement (Finnish: Suomen vastarintaliike) was active in at least the cities of Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Jyväskylä and Pori. One of their main tactics was the planting of propaganda stickers and posters, but the organization engaged in acts of violence including the Jyväskylä library stabbing. Subsequently, it was banned in 2019. Its members also participated in combat training arranged by the organization.[13]
