Off West End refers to professional theatres in London which are not included in among the commercial theatres in Central London .[citation needed] Unlike the West End theatres, which are commercial concerns relying on box-office receipts, "Off West-End" theatres rely on government subsidy.[1] Normally actors, directors, etc. will gain experience in Off West End before appearing in one of the big West End theatres in London or, sometimes, Broadway in New York.

All West End Theatres have to be registered with the Society Of London Theatre and Off West End Theatres can optionally join the SOLT membership.[2]

Nearly all of Britain's famous actors and actresses began their careers in these theatres and many continue to support them very actively.
