Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966) is an American recording artist and actress. Born in Gary, Indiana, and raised in Encino, Los Angeles, she is the youngest child of the Jackson family of musicians. She first performed on stage with her family beginning at the age of seven, and later started her career as an actress with the variety television series The Jacksons in 1976. She went on to appear in other television shows throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including Good Times and Fame.

At age sixteen in 1982, she signed a recording contract with A&M, releasing her self-titled debut album the same year. She faced criticism for her limited vocal range, and for being yet another member of the Jackson family to become a recording artist. Beginning with her third studio album Control (1986), she began a long-term collaboration with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Her music with Jam and Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, disco, funk, and rap with sample loop, triplet swing and industrial beats, which led to crossover appeal in popular music. In addition to receiving recognition for the innovation in her albums, choreography, music videos, and prominence on MTV, Jackson was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics.

Having sold over 100 million records worldwide, Jackson is ranked as one of the best-selling artists in the history of contemporary music. The Recording Industry Association of America lists her as the eleventh best-selling female artist in the United States, with 26 million certified albums. Her longevity, records and achievements reflect her influence in shaping and redefining the scope of popular music. She has been cited as an inspiration among numerous performers.

Beginning in July 2001, Janet Jackson's All for You Tour was a concert tour designed to promote the release of her 2001 album All for You. The tour was originally scheduled to kick off in Vancouver, Canada, but due to problems at the Canada – United States border with getting technical equipment across, the first show took place in Portland, Oregon while the Vancouver date was postponed to a later date. The show was designed by Mark Fisher. The tour trekked through North America through the summer of 2001 and ended with a final show in Honolulu, Hawaii that was broadcast by HBO.

The All for You tour was notable for a highly sexualized rendition of "Would You Mind", where Jackson would select a male from the audience and have him strapped into a chair while caressing and fondling him in front of the audience. The tour went on to become one of the top-grossing tours of 2001 and saw Jackson performing most of her hits. A DVD of the concert, entitled Live in Hawaii, was released later in 2002.

Control is the third studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on February 6, 1986 by A&M Records. Her collaborations with songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis resulted in an unconventional sound: a fusion of rhythm and blues, rap vocals, funk, disco and synthesized percussion that established Jackson, Jam and Lewis as the leading innovators of contemporary R&B. It enabled Jackson to transition into the popular music market, becoming one of the defining albums of the 1980s and contemporary music.

Control is widely regarded as the breakthrough album of Jackson's career. It became her first album to top the Billboard 200 and five of its commercial singles—"What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Nasty", "Control", "When I Think of You", and "Let's Wait Awhile"—peaked within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. It went on to receive several accolades, including the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical for Jam and Lewis in 1987. Control is listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Albums of All Time. It has been certified fivefold platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over fourteen million copies worldwide.

Selected Song - show another

"Doesn't Really Matter" is a song recorded by American R&B-pop singer Janet Jackson for the soundtrack to the 2000 film Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. Released as a single in July 2000, the track later appeared on Jackson's seventh studio album, All for You (2001). The song was the lead single from the Universal Pictures film Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, in which Jackson co-starred with actor Eddie Murphy. It became Jackson's ninth number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and first in the 2000s, staying atop for three weeks, and also making Jackson the first artist in history to score number-one singles in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. An alternate mix of the song was later included on Jackson's seventh studio album, 2001's All for You. Jackson performed this version at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The song was used in the dance video game Dance Dance Revolution SuperNova, and was covered in Japanese by Hitomi Shimatani and re-titled "Papillon" (Jackson's character's name). Jackson performed the song on her All for You Tour and Rock Witchu Tour.
