Template:/box-header The University of Texas at Austin (informally Texas, University of Texas, UT Austin, or simply UT) is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. The main campus is located in Downtown Austin, TX, USA, less than a mile from the Texas State Capitol. Founded in 1883, the University is sometimes referred to as a "Public Ivy," and it is currently (as of Fall 2005) the fifth largest single-campus in the USA by enrollment (and had the largest enrollment in the country from 1997-2003), with upwards of 50,000 students and 20,000 faculty and staff. The McDonald Observatory is located near the town of Fort Davis, Texas in the Davis Mountains of West Texas, the United States. The site is campus property of the University of Texas at Austin and mainly funded by the university, along with revenues from telescope leases. The observatory is equipped with a wide range of instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy in the optical and infrared and operates the first lunar laser ranging station. McDonald works closely with, though it is administratively separate from, the astronomy department of the University of Texas at Austin. The McDonald Observatory also produces and consults on StarDate, a daily syndicated radio astronomy segment hosted by Sandy Wood, which airs on stations throughout the nation in both English and Spanish. The Main Building of The University of Texas at Austin is a structure at the center of the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas that houses the university's administrative offices. The Main Building's 307-foot (93-meter) tower, often referred to as "The Tower", has 28-floors and is one of the most recognizable symbols of the University. It also houses the Life Science Library. - August 3, 2006 — According to The Daily Texan, The University's Division of Housing and Food has plans to expand their total number of beds from 7,000 to 9,000. The division is the largest source of housing in the campus area with an estimated 27,000 beds in the area.
- July 2006 — Darlene Grant, an associate professor in the School of Social work and an associate dean of graduate studies, has been named 2006 Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers. She focuses on incarcerated women and their children.
- July 2006 —Vince Young agreed to terms on his initial contract with the Titans. Terms of the deal are believed to include five years with a sixth year team option and as much as $58 million overall including $25.7 million in guaranteed money.
- July 2006 — Longhorns at the 2006 ESPY Awards, Cat Osterman won for Best Female College Athlete and Vince Young won for Best Championship Performance. Young shared an award for Best Game with Matt Leinart. Other Longhorns also received nominations.

- June 2006 — Actor, director and producer Robert De Niro donates his extensive archive of film-related items to the Harry Ransom Center. Dating from the late-1960s, the collection includes written materials (e.g. scripts, notes and correspondence) and over 3,000 costume items.
