Se2grXII (LXXIEJ 12, Rahlfs 943), is an early koine greek manuscript with material from the Minor prophets translated from the masoretic text (kaige revision). The fragments Se2grXII, 8HevXII a and 8HevXII b complete the Greek Minor Prophets Scroll from Nahal Hever (today as 8HevXII gr, Rahlfs 943 or vh285). Dated to the end of the first century C.E., this manuscript was discovered in the Judean Desert.

History

The parchment was discovered in August 1952 in the Judean Desert by Bedouins coming from Wadi Seiyâl, probably in the Nahal Hever's region. The exact place of origin is unknown. It was rescued for the Palestine Archaeological Museum (today is Rockefeller Museum), and was originally marked with the siglum Se2grXII, in reference to the twelve Minor prophets. Nine fragments were later found (1961) inside the "Cave of Terror" (Cave N º 8 in the Nahal Hever valley) by a team of Israeli archaeologists led by Yigael Yadin.

Today, the scroll is housed in the Rockefeller Museum, Jerusalem (recorded as Gr. Se2grXII).

Description and translation

The manuscript is written in koine greek, but contains the tetragrammaton written in Paleo-Hebrew script in Jonas 3:3. In later copies of the Hebrew Bible translated to greek, the name of God has been replaced by the title Kurios or Theos, abbreviated per the nomina sacra.

The translated manuscripts were published by the Hebrew University in the Israel Exploration Journal in 1962.[1] The newer siglum of the manuscript, LXXIEJ 12 refers to the publication and volume number. Next year other publication was made by Dominique Barthélemy, Les devanciers d'Aquila p. 18-29 (Barthélemy, Jean-Dominique; 1963;). Later, Emanuel Tov in The Greek minor prophets scroll from Nahal Hever (Discoveries in the Judaean desert 8) (Tov, Emanuel / Kraft, Robert A. / Parsons, Peter J.; 1990; transcription, image).
