32 1 "I, Witness" Peter Weller Albert Kim October 1, 2015 (2015-10-01) 3AWL02 3.46[7]
Nine months have passed. A mysterious woman named Pandora encounters the Headless Horseman and seals him away in her box, and in exchange is granted the power of a demon that causes fear in its victims before killing them. Ichabod reaches out to Abbie (who is now an agent with the FBI) after he is arrested and detained for smuggling a tablet from his travels into the country. When Abbie arrives to have him released, he shows her Katrina's pendant which is linked to Abraham's soul and tells her that something has happened to him (Abraham), and that the second tribulation is about to begin. After catching up on lost time, Ichabod and Abbie are drawn into a murder investigation involving two men in a cabin whom they learn were killed by a demon that paralyzed them with fear before killing them. Ichabod recounts his relationship with Betsy Ross to Abbie and Jenny when they learn about a message she once carried that can help them kill the demon. They learn that the demon is vulnerable when its eyes are whitened, and that it's attracted to gunpowder. So Ichabod and Jenny lure the demon with gunpowder while Abbie is on a raid, the plan goes badly and Abbie shoots the demon before it attacks Ichabod and watches as it turns to dust.
33 2 "Whispers in the Dark" Russell Fine M. Raven Metzner October 8, 2015 (2015-10-08) 3AWL01 3.27[8]
A strange death in a shopping mall results in the discovery that an ancient demon has been released that hunts those who are keeping key secrets from others. During their confrontation with it, Abbie reveals that she has been monitoring her long-absent father - although she is undecided about what she will do with this discovery - and Crane reveals that General Howe offered him a chance to return to Britain if he exposed Washington's spies, Crane being briefly tempted by the offer. Learning that the demon was once a human being that is vulnerable when identified by its original name Marcus Collins, Crane is able to defeat it.
34 3 "Blood and Fear" Kate Dennis Damian Kindler October 15, 2015 (2015-10-15) 3AWL03 2.97[9]
Pandora's next assault involves giving a man a knife that causes him to act on his darker impulses and murder those he hates. Witnessing one of the bodies, Ichabod recalls a similar case when he was a boy at Eton College in 1763, and realizes that the killer they are tracking was also Jack the Ripper. Research at the archive reveals that the knife itself is the actual Ripper, as it drives its 'wielder' to kill. Researching the past killings, Ichabod and Abby realize that the killings are always stopped amid an epidemic wave of disease, and conclude that the knife absorbs the blood of its victims and its wielder died when the knife killed an infected person. Although attempts to shoot the killer with malaria-tainted blood fail, Ichabod is able to defeat the killer by infecting himself with the disease, against which he had already built up an immunity. However, Pandora apparently takes Abby's moment of fear for Ichabod's life and uses it to make a flower bloom on a mysterious tree.
35 4 "The Sisters Mills" Guillermo Navarro Heather V. Regnier October 22, 2015 (2015-10-22) 3AWL04 2.89[10]
Ichabod and Abbie investigate a case involving two sisters; the younger had fallen into a mysterious coma, and the other tells them that she witnessed her sister being attacked by a monster. They learn that the creature responsible is called the Abyzou, which Ichabod likens to the Tooth Fairy when they discover that the demon targets children who are about to lose, or have lost, a tooth and feeds on their soul. Ichabod remembers that Betsy Ross was in a similar situation with her niece, and had enlisted the help of Paul Revere, a local dentist who woke her niece by killing the demon. At the hospital, Pandora targets the older sister and gives her the means to lure the creature, with the promise it will help save her younger sister. She then visits Abbie, who had been attacked by the creature earlier. That night, Ichabod saves the girl, shoots the Abyzou with a gun constructed from Paul Revere's tools with silver nitrate ammunition, which make the demon visible, and Jenny kills it by stabbing it. Abbie and the girl make a full recovery at the hospital, while another flower blooms on Pandora's tree.
36 5 "Dead Men Tell No Tales" Russell Fine Sam Chalsen & Nelson Greaves October 29, 2015 (2015-10-29) 3AWL05 4.57[11]
Following the events of the Bones episode "The Resurrection in the Remains:" Pandora reanimates William Howe as an undead being while his remains are being sent to Sleepy Hollow from Washington and instructs him to reanimate his old soldiers as an undead army. Crane and Abbie learn that he can only be defeated by a secret which is hidden in his original tomb. Using fragments of Howe's skeleton, they call in a favor from Special Agent Seeley Booth and Doctor Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Bones) to analyze the fragments, discovering the tomb underneath the Capitol Building, originally designed for George Washington's use. Learning that the creatures are vulnerable to Greek fire - although Brennan dismisses it as an early form of napalm - they lure Howe's army underneath Sleepy Hollow and destroy them in the sewers with minimal collateral damage. Although aware of Pandora's role in Howe's resurrection, Ichabod and Abbie are unaware that another flower has bloomed on her tree.
37 6 "This Red Lady from Caribee" Olatunde Osunsanmi Shernold Edwards November 5, 2015 (2015-11-05) 3AWL06 3.04[12]
Pandora's latest summoning involves a creature that stings its targets and causes them to succumb to paranoia before the infection kills them. One of the victims attacks Agent Reynolds. Finding records of an encounter between Betsy Ross and the creature, Crane and Abbie are able to locate the beast's lair and burn it down, but are taken by surprise upon discovering Pandora's tree, as she enters while the sixth blossom is blooming.
38 7 "The Art of War" Hanelle Culpepper Joe Webb November 12, 2015 (2015-11-12) 3AWL07 3.02[13]
Jenny realizes that she has actually absorbed the power of the Shard of Anubis, prompting Atticus to summon a trio of creatures to search for her and drain the power. While the creatures originate from Norse mythology, Crane realizes that they were summoned by invoking Pandora's name, which results in them being immune to their traditional weakness of mistletoe. Although Crane is inspired to use Jenny's blood to trick the creatures into attacking each other, Jenny falls under the Shard's influence, returning to Pandora's tree just as Pandora returns, accompanied by another man in a long robe.
39 8 "Novus Ordo Seclorum" Russell Fine Leigh Dana Jackson November 19, 2015 (2015-11-19) 3AWL08 2.80[14]
Learning that Pandora's summoned ally is an ancient Sumerian god known only as 'the Hidden One', Crane recalls a tale in the books in the armory about the death of Paul Revere's nephew under similar circumstances. Realizing that the Shard of Anubis contained and hid the power that is now within Jenny, Crane is able to reforge the shard based on his memory of witnessing its original creation. When Nevins offers to talk to Abbie about where she might find Jenny, he is killed by Pandora, who offers Abbie and Crane a place in the new world that she and her 'husband' will create once they have 'cleansed' the current one. While Crane uses Nevins' book to distract Pandora by attempting to summon something from her Box, Abbie drains the Shard's power into the new shard, but, believing that it is the only way to save the world and her sister, she then takes the new Shard into the Hell portal under Pandora's tree. The resulting energy release apparently destroys Pandora's Box, leaving Abbie's fate unclear.
40 9 "One Life" Kate Dennis Albert Kim February 5, 2016 (2016-02-05) 3AWL09 3.13[15]

When the demon targets Daniel Reynolds, who is taking the disappearance of Abbie badly and suspects Ichabod may be responsible. Ichabod and Sophie travel to the cabin Reynolds was staying at, and are able to trap the demon back in the mirror and destroy it.

Ichabod reunites with Abbie using astral projection, and discovers that a year has passed in her current location. Before they can talk, Pandora appears and cuts the anchor keeping his spirit with Abbie and tells her that she can help her escape and assist Ichabod in exchange for the shard. Abbie refuses and destroys the shard, and returns to the sword left by the well by Betsy Ross and uses it as an anchor to repel down with a vine to return to the real world. Jenny, Joe, and Sophia investigate a murder at Stone Manor and discover a gargoyle was responsible, and decide to entomb it in concrete. Abbie returns to Ichabod who is unconscious still and reminds him of their bond, and watches as he reawakens.

When the Kindred re-emerges and kills three couples and abducts Zoe, Ichabod and Abbie learn that the Kindred is becoming more human and wants a bride. They learn about the Kindress, which was created to have a calming influence on the Kindred. Ichabod recites the incantation to bring the Kindress to life while Sophia, Jenny and Joe rescue Zoe. With the Kindress now alive, they watch as the Kindred and Kindress leave the area. Meanwhile, the Hidden One reacts angrily as his supposed asset leaves Sleepy Hollow with the Kindress and destroys them both.
43 12 "Sins of the Father" Wendey Stanzler Damian Kindler February 26, 2016 (2016-02-26) 3AWL12 2.96[18]
Atticus Nevins returns to Sleepy Hollow and reaches out to Abbie with claims he's being tracked by a demon from his past. After being imprisoned, he tells the story of serving in the first Gulf War with August Corbin, and of how their squad found a cave filled with gold guarded by a demon. They learn that the creature is a demonic ghoul that guards sacred sites as noted in August Corbin's secret notes, and that it can be controlled by a golden scarab. When former associates of Nevin's are killed by the ghoul, Nevins reveals that he had the scarab inside his body the entire time, and then orders the creature to attack Ichabod and Abbie while he makes his escape with Corbin's notes. Abbie shoots the scarab and stops the creature. Abbie meets with her father at a café, worried about the onset of her mother's insanity. Later, she opens her diary, which is filled with the symbol, and reveals that the symbol is also painted on the wall; she pledges allegiance to the symbol, saying, "You saved me. I'm yours."
44 13 "Dark Mirror" Sylvain White Sam Chalsen & Nelson Greaves March 4, 2016 (2016-03-04) 3AWL13 2.96[19]
Ichabod and Abbie investigate a case involving the Jersey Devil, and learn that the person responsible was a man named Dr. Japeth Leeds, who had turned himself into the devil using alchemy. When they uncover his lab, Abbie is drawn to the symbol, which is attached to a wax cylinder that they decide to play on a phonograph. They watch a video recording about the Hidden One which tells of an era when humanity served the gods, and of how the Hidden One was cast down into the catacombs to guard Pandora's Box. The Hidden One tells Pandora about an hourglass that holds the power of the gods who live in the light. Pandora, along with her followers use the box to kill the god, and are joined by the Hidden One. The recording ends with the Hidden One being drawn back into the catacombs. Ichabod and Abbie confront Japeth Leeds when they learn that he plans to recreate the sands of life from the hourglass using primal gold. Abbie stabs him with the rod, and watches as he is struck by lightning, and discovers the sands are gone.
45 14 "Into the Wild" Paul Edwards Albert Kim March 11, 2016 (2016-03-11) 3AWL14 2.91[20]
During an FBI survival exercise in the woods, Abbie, Sophia and Danny race to save their guide who was attacked by a Verslinder. They decide to travel to a cabin, and Danny tells Abbie that he's leaving to get help. At the cabin, Abbie and Sophia discover a journal that tells of a creature that was sealed away 400 years ago by dutch settlers, and of how a man named Thomas was infected and later transformed into the Verslinder. Meanwhile, Joe and Jenny encounter a fragment of Pandora's Box at an auction and successfully bid for it. They later encounter Pandora who demands that they return the piece to her, and are able to escape when Hans shoots her. When Ichabod learns that the symbol has two parts, he places them against his tablet and has visions of Abbie in the woods. That night, Ichabod rescues Abbie and Sophia and shoots the creature dead. Ichabod tells Abbie how he was able to find her, and they speculate that the symbol may not be evil as it reacted to the tablet of witnesses. The groups guide Robbie recovers.
46 15 "Incommunicado" Russell Fine Shernold Edwards & Heather V. Regnier March 18, 2016 (2016-03-18) 3AWL15 2.83[21]
Ichabod is confronted by The Hidden One at the archives and is saved by the symbol which absorbs his attack. In the tunnels, Abbie encounters Pandora and learns that the symbol is called the emblem of Thura, and that its power has created a barrier to seal a god. They decide to work together in an effort to break through it. Meanwhile Jenny, Joe and Sophia investigate a case involving three men who were killed by a Banshee. After learning that the Banshee is irritated by loud noises, they lure it with an ambulance siren, but before they can kill it, Abbie sends Jenny a text saying they need it alive, and it escapes. Ichabod listens to some truths about his past from The Hidden One. That night, Joe tells Pandora and Abbie that he had to kill the Banshee to save Jennys life, and then offers himself in its place. Now in Wendigo form, Pandora channels Joe's dark energy using the two fragments of the box and breaks through the barrier, freeing Ichabod and The Hidden One. Ichabod discovers the emblem has been destroyed, along with the tablet.
47 16 "Dawn's Early Light" Paul Edwards Leigh Dana Jackson, Sam Chalsen & Nelson Greaves March 25, 2016 (2016-03-25) 3AWL16 2.52[22]
The Hidden One reacts angrily to the news that Pandora knew that Abbie and Ichabod had the emblem of Thura in their possession and punishes her for not telling him sooner. Pandora decides to seek out the assistance of Ichabod and Abbie and tells Ichabod in the tunnels that she requires the rest of the pieces of her box, and that it was designed to contain the power of the gods. Although skeptical, Ichabod listens on as she tells him it can only be regenerated in the place it was created, the catacombs. They decide to travel to Paul Revere house believing that the golden thread in the flag created by Betsy Ross may be the key to returning to the catacombs, and discover it had been replaced. They inadvertently trigger the eternal soldier guarding the flag which attacks them. The flag however contained a musical clue that leads Ichabod and Abbie to Fort McHenry. Pandora appears before The Hidden One in astral form and parts ways with him. Ichabod and Abbie discover Betsy's flag inside the statue of Orpheus, and are saved by Jenny and Joe when the eternal soldier attacks them again. The dawn's early light reacts with the flag, revealing the path Washington had taken to the catacombs.

49 18 "Ragnarok" Russell Fine M. Raven Metzner April 8, 2016 (2016-04-08) 3AWL18 2.96[24]
In the antechamber of the temple, Ichabod recites the incantation to restore Pandora's box, and notices some scriptures on the walls that state that the box requires the eternal soul of a witness. The box attempts to absorb Abbie's soul, but is closed by Ichabod and Betsy Ross. Betsy is able to return to her own time while Abbie, who feels the effects of the box, joins Ichabod and Jenny in confronting The Hidden One. Ichabod returns the box to Pandora who uses it to absorb The Hidden One's power, but she's unsuccessful as the box requires the soul of a witness. Abbie sacrifices herself, while Ichabod and Jenny despair. With The Hidden One now powerless, Jenny shoots him in the head. That night, Ichabod summons the Headless Horseman from the box, and during the battle he deals a critical injury to Pandora. Before Pandora dies, she tells Ichabod that Abbie is no longer inside the box, as her soul has moved on. Ichabod has a heartfelt goodbye with Abbie who appears to him after the box explodes. At Abbie's grave, Ichabod learns about a secret order founded by Washington from Ezra. Ichabod vows to find the next witness after learning about Abbie's eternal soul. He then leaves for Washington D.C. with the FBI agents from the order.

Production

Casting

On July 15, 2015 it was announced that Nikki Reed had joined the cast in a series regular role as Betsy Ross, an old flame of Ichabod.[25] Also joining the cast is Shannyn Sossamon who is set to play Pandora, a mysterious new presence in Sleepy Hollow who seeks the assistance of Ichabod and Abbie.[26] Jessica Camacho who plays the role of Sophia Foster, was also upgraded to series regular this season.[27]

It was also announced that Orlando Jones would not be reprising his role this season,[28] and that Neil Jackson would not be appearing as the Headless Horseman this season, due to the creative changes made to the show by the new showrunner.[29]

Filming

Production was moved from Wilmington, North Carolina when the state scrapped the tax credits incentive, to Atlanta, Georgia where it was reported that the show will receive 30% tax credits.[30]

Crossover with Bones

A crossover event with Bones aired on October 29, 2015. It consists of two parts, with characters from both shows appearing in both episodes.[31] The two episodes are linked by the use of the corpse of General William Howe, the British commander during the American Revolution; his skull is revealed to have essentially served as the murder weapon in Bones and he is reanimated by Pandora to serve as a weapon against Crane in Sleepy Hollow.
