The New Mexico Museum of Art (formerly the Museum of Fine Arts), the oldest art museum in the state of New Mexico, is one of four state-run museums in Santa Fe. It is one of eight museums in the state operated by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.

Architecture

The museum is located at 107 West Palace Avenue, one block off the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Designed by Isaac Rapp and built in 1917,[1] it is an example of Pueblo Revival Style architecture,[2] and one of Santa Fe's best-known representations of the synthesis of Native American and Spanish Colonial design styles.

Art Collection

The museum’s permanent collection includes over 20,000 works[3] by artists ranging from the members of the historic Taos and Santa Fe art colonies of the past hundred years to cutting-edge contemporary art from around the region and the world.[4] Highlights of the museum’s works of art include extensive collections of the Cinco Pintores; the Taos Society of Artists; the largest collection of Gustave Baumann; the Lucy Lippard Collection;[5] photographers, including the Jane Reese Williams Collection of women photographers;[6] new media, including video installations; two sculpture gardens and an important collection of Georgia O'Keeffe paintings.

Exhibitions

The Museum of Art hosts changing exhibitions featuring artists of New Mexico and the Southwest. The shows range from traditional art to contemporary lithographs and photographs.[7] The museum also attracts traveling exhibitions with international scope, such as 2013's Renaissance to Goya : Prints and Drawings from Spain [8]

St. Francis Auditorium

The St. Francis Auditorium, located in the New Mexico Museum of Art, is the venue for various cultural and musical organizations, including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Santa Fe Community Orchestra. The auditorium has a seating capacity of 450.[9]

Library

The museum library contains art books, periodicals, biographical files of artists represented in the permanent collection and catalogs of exhibitions since 1917.[10]
