History
The club was established in 1902 and was a founding member of the League of Ireland in 1921 and became the first league champions that season. St James's Gate was also the inaugural winner of the FAI Cup. In 1940, a second league title was added but in 1944 having finished in last place, the league denied their application for re-election.
They entered the intermediate-level Leinster Senior League and became one of the top non-League sides in Ireland. In 1990, they re-entered the League of Ireland in place of Newcastlewest, this time entering in the second tier, League of Ireland First Division. In 1995, the club was taken over by a consortium. Only one year later, however, just before the start of the 1996/97 season, they pulled out of the league, unable to meet their financial responsibilities. They were replaced by St. Francis.
The club currently has two senior teams playing in the Leinster Senior League. The first team was promoted to the Senior 1A League in June 2014 also winning The Gilligan Cup and finishing runner-up in The Moore Cup. The second team plays in the Major 1B Saturday League.
The club played in St. James's Park from 1921/22-1927/28 before moving to the Iveagh Grounds. The club facilities include dressing rooms, a gym, astro-turf training pitch, clubhouse, and bar. The team pitch also has floodlights which allows the 1st team to play their home games on Friday nights and the second team to play on Saturday nights.
