In “Unified Year 1914,” a soul is reincarnated as Tanya Degurechaff, an orphan in the Empire, an alternate universe union of Germany and Austria where scientifically-accessible magic is real. This person (also the narrator) was a Japanese sarariman, a Human Resources manager, in our universe, until an employee he terminated impulsively pushed him in front of a commuter train in A.D. 2013. Plummeting down to the tracks, a supernatural being claiming to be the Biblical God stops time and complains that the nameless salaryman, and much of humanity, lack compassion and faith in a divine order. The salaryman smugly notes that advanced science and industry make religion obsolete, which provokes the power, dubbed “Being X” by the narrator, into reincarnating him into that alternate world. With no family or fortune, but with a talent for magic, Tanya, who retains all memories from her life in Japan, and who sees war approaching, joins the Imperial Army as a magical officer candidate, intending to “ride the military's rails” to a soft job in the rear, but fails miserably at it.

Tanya, now commanding an augmented mage battalion, fights the Principality of Dacia (our Romania, approximately), then returns to Norden Command to lead General Rudersdorf's strike to knock the Entente Alliance (our Sweden and Norway) out of the war. She meets, but does not recognize, Alliance mage Anson Sue from the first book. Tanya then returns to the hellish Rhine theatre, where the François Republic has reinforced militia in the City of Arene, threatening the Empire's supply lines and exposing their own civilians to urban combat. The book ends with the strategic retreat preceding Operation *Schrecken und Ehrfurcht* (“Shock and Awe”).

After Operation Shock and Awe, the François Republic is expected to surrender, panicking the Commonwealth (the U.K.), who do not wish to see any nation dominate all of Europe. General de Lugo (an approximate anagram for “de Gaulle” creates a Free Republic government in exile on the “Southern Continent” (North Africa), where he faces the Empire's General Romel and Major Degurechaff. Anson Sue's daughter, Mary, joins the Army of the Unified States (the U.S.A.) to avenge her late father and her country. The supernatural powers from the first two books reappear as well, concerned over the swell of atheism in the Communist Russy Federation.

The overextended Empire's Strategic Headquarters sends Tanya and the 203rd Mage Battalion on a covert mission to the Russy Federation, to search for evidence that a surprise attack may be in the offing. The Commonwealth is still supporting the Free Republic and making attacks of its own. Mary Sue sees Tanya for the first time. Finally, Tanya requests a position in the rear, but is instead told to organize a Kampfgruppe: an early combined arms regiment of mages, armor and mechanized infantry.
