The School of Social Welfare of the University of California, Berkeley, is located in Haviland Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Its focus is preparing social work professionals for the public and nonprofit sectors. It offers an Undergraduate Group Major in Social Welfare along with the College of Letters and Science, the M.S.W., and the Ph.D. The school has its own library, founded in 1957, which contains approximately 34,400 volumes and 200 active serial titles.[4]

Undergraduates majoring in social welfare belong to the College of Letters and Science, while the major is administered by the School of Social Welfare. Social welfare as an undergraduate major in L&S is capped at 130 students.[5]

As of fall 2013, there are 30 doctoral and 177 master's/first professional students in the School.[3] The school has an M.S.W. program, a concurrent/dual degree M.S.W./M.P.H. program, a concurrent M.S.W./M.P.P. program, a combined M.S.W./Ph.D. program, and a Ph.D. program.

M.S.W. students have the opportunity to participate in field education, in which they complete an internship for an agency related to their career goals.[6] The School maintains 9 research units, whose focuses include child services, family welfare, and social conflict.[7]
