The U.P. Computer Center is an independent unit of the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines that provides high-speed computer and information technology services to the University faculty, administration and students. It is now under the Office of the Chancellor of UP Diliman It is housed in the UP Alumni Engineers (UPAE) Building at the back of the Melchor Hall compound.

Also called the UP CC (or CC for short), the facility serves as the central hub that interconnects the fiber-optic backbones in UP Diliman and other UP campuses. The center is also the hub of the UP Diliman Wireless Network, which has over 100 WiFi Hot Spots deployed all over the campus as of 2011.

The UP Computer Center should not be confused with the Department of Computer Science of the UP College of Engineering, or the National Computer Center (which is located near the UP Diliman campus as well), a common mistake made by visitors and callers to the University trunkline.

The center is administered by a member of the faculty and manned by full-time employees and student assistants. Its current director is Dr. Manuel C. Ramos, Jr. from the UP Diliman Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute.

Brief History

The U.P. Computer Center was established in September 15, 1966 as a department by the University of the Philippines for one primary purpose: to provide high-speed computer services for the use of the University faculty, administration and studentry in academic research, administration and instruction. In its first two years, it received grants from the Ford Foundation and IBM Corporation, which enabled it to acquire an IBM S 360/40 mainframe. The Computer Center became operational in April 1968 with Professor Jose Maria de Castro as its first director.
