Payback (2014) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It took place on June 1, 2014 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois[1] It was the second WWE pay-per-view held under the Payback name, the first having been held in 2013 at the same venue. Nine matches (including the pre-show) took place at the event. In the main event, The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) defeated Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista) in a No Holds Barred six-man tag team elimination match. It was the first WWE pay-per-view since Armageddon back in 2006 to not be featured the World Championship match. Payback drew 67,000 buys (excluding WWE Network views), down from previous year's 186,000 buys.[2]

Payback featured professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on WWE's television programs. Wrestlers portrayed heroes or villains as they followed a series of events that built tension, and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

The main feud heading into the event was between Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista) and The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns). After losing to them at Extreme Rules,[3] Evolution continued to feud with The Shield. The following night on Raw, Triple H forced Dean Ambrose to defend his United States Championship in a 20-man battle royal, which was won by Sheamus. The Shield then fought The Wyatt Family later in the night; just as things turned in The Shield's favor, Evolution came out and distracted The Shield, allowing Bray Wyatt to pick up the win for the Wyatt Family by pinning Roman Reigns. Evolution then assaulted The Shield and hit Roman Reigns with The Shield's signature triple power bomb.[4][5] The following week, The Shield challenged Evolution to a rematch at Payback, which Evolution accepted.[6] It was announced following week on Raw that the match at Payback will be a No Holds Barred six-man elimination tag team match.[7][8]

Since costing him title matches at the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber, The Wyatt Family have been feuding with John Cena. This led to several matches at subsequent events, with Cena defeating Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania XXX in a singles match and Wyatt winning a Steel Cage match at Extreme Rules via escaping from the cage.[3] On the May 12 episode of Raw, Wyatt challenged Cena to a Last Man Standing match,[9] which was accepted by Cena on the May 16 episode of SmackDown.[10][11]

El Torito and Hornswoggle would continue their feud. They previously fought at Extreme Rules in the first ever WeeLC match which saw Torito defeat Hornswoggle. Hornswoggle put forth a Mask vs. Hair match wagering his hair against El Torito's mask which will take place on the pre-show.

Paige defended her WWE Divas Championship against Alicia Fox at Payback. The two divas faced each other on the May 12 episode of Raw,[12][13] which Paige won, and on the May 19 episode of Raw, which Fox won.[14]

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan announced on May 12 that he would have undergo neck surgery later that week.[15] Because of this Stephanie McMahon suggested that Daniel Bryan would have to surrender the title if he cannot return to action by the pay-per-view where he was originally scheduled to defend against Kane. While his surgery was successful, it was still unknown if Bryan could compete for the title so McMahon gave him another week to surrender the title. On the May 26 episode of Raw,[16] Bryan stated that while he found no shame in dropping the title due to injury, he did not want to give it to McMahon after everything he had been through. Upset at this, she gave Bryan one more chance to give her the title saying that if he does not surrender the title to her by the pay-per-view, she would fire his wife Brie Bella.[17]

Sheamus defended his United States Championship against Cesaro at Payback. The two wrestlers fought to a double countout on the May 13 episode of Main Event.[18] On the May 19 episode of Raw, Cesaro defeated Sheamus in a non-title rematch due to some slight interference from Cesaro's manager Paul Heyman, setting up the title match at the pay-per-view.[14][19]

On the May 19 edition of Raw, there were three Beat the Clock challenge matches to determine a new number one contender to face Bad News Barrett for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at Payback. The matches were Big E vs Ryback, Rob Van Dam vs. Alberto Del Rio, and Dolph Ziggler vs. Mark Henry. Big E beat Ryback to set a time of 5:02; Van Dam defeated Del Rio and set a new time of 4:15, and Ziggler and Henry wrestled to a time limit draw. This gave Van Dam the win and the title shot.[14][20]

On the May 26 episode of Raw, Zack Ryder celebrated Memorial Day by coming out with an American flag before facing Rusev. Rusev defeated Ryder via submission, but refused to let go after the bell rang until Big E came in, eventually knocking Rusev out of the ring. This set up a match between both men at Payback.[21][22]

Event

The pre-show included the Kickoff panel of Josh Mathews, Booker T, Kofi Kingston and Alex Riley previewing the matches. Also on the Kickoff show, El Torito defeated Hornswoggle in a Mask vs. Hair match which was followed by El Torito shaving the head of Hornswoggle in a barber's chair at ringside.

Miscellaneous

The English commentators were Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and John "Bradshaw" Layfield while there were also Spanish and German commentators ringside. Lilian Garcia and Justin Roberts were ring announcers.

Preliminary matches

The first match of the night saw Sheamus defending the WWE United States Championship against Cesaro. Paul Heyman cut off the "CM Punk!" chants by telling everyone that the absent star was watching hockey and not going to be in the arena. He smoothly transitioned that into introducing Cesaro. Sheamus charged early, cracking his knee against Cesaro's chest. Cesaro countered with a suplex and then proceeded to pound on the champion with swift kicks.With Heyman looking downtrodden on the outside, Sheamus smashed Cesaro's chest with his Beats of the Bodhran. A thunderous uppercut from Cesaro stopped the momentum. This constant shift of the advantage continued. Each man delivered a number of stinging blows only to suffer some from his opponent moments later. Sheamus hit three flying knees from the second rope. Cesaro responded with a diving uppercut. Following a Cloverleaf by Sheamus and Cesaro Swing, Sheamus rolled up Cesaro as he went for a pin attempt, scoring a pinfall victory.

The second match featured Cody Rhodes and Goldust against Ryback and Curtis Axel. In an unannounced match, Curtis Axel and Ryback began aggressively. They had Cody Rhodes reeling early with power moves and big forearms. Rhodes escaped and tagged his brother in only to watch Goldust play the role of sufferer. Ryback wrenched his arm back. Axel slammed him to the mat. Goldust gutted it out, slipping away to tag Rhodes back in. Rhodes picked up the pace of the match, knocking both men down. His fiery offense earned him a few near-falls. He went for the Disaster kick, but Ryback caught him, delivered Shell Shocked and continued Rhodes' losing streak. Goldust tried to console him. Rhodes grabbed a mic and told Goldust that he needed a better tag team partner than him before walking out.

The next match featured Rusev against Big E. In the beginning Lana insulted the United States and saluted Vladimir Putin, per her usual. Rusev soon joined her, vigorously waving the Russian flag. Big E waved the American flag during his entrance. Both men collided after the bell rang. A nasty suplex from Rusev stopped Big E's flurry of strikes. Rusev then looked to run into Big E in the corner, but Big E knocked him on his back. Big E smashed into Rusev, sending both men outside. While Rusev looked more vulnerable than he ever has, he soon responded with fury. A thrust kick knocked down Big E as Rusev applied the Accolade for the tap out victory.

The fourth match featured Kofi Kingston against Bo Dallas, making his pay-per view debut. Dallas took a shot at the Chicago Blackhawks, but the match never got underway after Kane made his way down to ringside. Dallas fled the ring, leaving Kingston to fight off Kane alone. Kane chokeslammed Kingston before hitting the Tombstone and leaving. Dallas then slipped in, comforted Kingston and told him he just had to "Bo-lieve."

The next match featured Bad News Barrett defending the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Rob Van Dam. Barrett controlled the action early, his power and hard strikes keeping Van Dam grounded. A hard kick from Van Dam changed the momentum as he then cracked Barrett into the barricade, threw him into the crowd and hit a spinning leg drop from the apron. The champion fought back, smacking Van Dam's head against the barricade. Van Dam soon went on a flurry, with well placed kicks. He looked to finish Barrett with the Five-Star Frog Splash, but missed. Barrett missed his own finisher, nailing the ring post with the Bull Hammer. Van Dam then went for another splash attempt, but Barrett rolled out of the way and then hit the Bull Hammer, scoring the pinfall and retaining the title.

Next was a segment involving WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan and Stephanie McMahon about Bryan surrendering the championship or his wife Brie Bella would be fired. Brie Bella accompanied him as he entered the ring. Fans tried to insert CM Punk chants, but McMahon deflected them. Bryan held seemed to have decided to surrender the championship but Brie grabbed the mic and announced that she quit instead. McMahon laughed at her, earning a slap from Bella, sending McMahon scurrying to the back.

The next match was a Last Man Standing Match between John Cena and Bray Wyatt. Wyatt roared, laughed and spread his arms out after his entrance music ended while Cena received his usual mixed reaction. The entire Wyatt Family closed in on Cena, but before they could attack, The Usos ran out, evened things up and forced Erick Rowan and Luke Harper to be bystanders. The clash began with a wild energy as Wyatt took control of the slugfest with hard shots to Cena's jaw. Wyatt scored with a few head butts that had Cena pulling on Wyatt's legs to stand. He gathered enough strength to hit the Five-Knuckle Shuffle, but his flurry was soon over after not being able to capitalize. Wyatt continued his onslaught on Cena, who was still struggling to stand. Wyatt's Sister Abigail finisher did not keep Cena down as he responded with the Attitude Adjustment, which wasn't enough to score the pin. A brawl broke between The Usos and The Wyatt Family at ringside as Harper dove out of the ring at his foes. Meanwhile, in the ring, Wyatt cracked a chair across Cena's back. His next chair shot only struck the ring post. It was then Cena's turn to take advantage of the Last Man Standing stipulation. He whacked Wyatt with the chair and then brought a table into the ring. Wyatt turned the table into a weapon for himself as he hit a suplex that sent Cena through it, barely able to rise for the 10-count. The clan leader then took to clocking his enemy with the steel steps. The level of viciousness increased, both men using more weapons, Wyatt hitting Sister Abigail outside the ring and Cena flinging him into another set of steps before hitting a second Attitude Adjustment. Harper and Rowan rushed back to ringside. They mauled Cena before lifting Wyatt to his feet to beat the referee's count. The ref struggled to maintain control as The Usos and The Wyatt Family used each other to break tables out of the ring and Wyatt broke a barricade by crashing into Cena. Cena and Wyatt fought among the sound equipment, where Cena won by sending Wyatt through a crate with the Attitude Adjustment and burying him under equipment cases so Wyatt couldn't recover before the 10 count. This match was later named the PWI match of the year.

Next match was Paige defending the WWE Divas Championship against Alicia Fox. Paige attacked Alicia Fox as soon as the bell rang. She cracked her knees against Fox's back and hit a ferocious suplex. Fox started crying on the outside, a means to lure the champ out there. The match descended into a brawl momentarily, each woman smashing each other with high-impact moves. When the bout moved back into the ring, Fox was in control. She bent Paige's back with a variety of holds, leaving red marks on her torso. Fox flung Paige out of the ring, barking at the crowd. The champion charged back, hitting an elbow and a clothesline to regain the advantage. She locked in the P.T.O, scoring the submission victory.

Main Event

The final match was The Shield battling Evolution in No Holds Barred six man tag team elimination match. The Shield and Evolution charged at each other in the opening moments. The brawl quickly broke off into three parts, Randy Orton vs. Dean Ambrose, Batista vs. Roman Reigns and Triple H vs. Seth Rollins. The fight led Reigns and Batista into the crowd. Rollins and Triple H soon followed. Eventually, everyone returned to the ring to begin the match properly. Moves of the power and high-impact varieties come fast, with Batista hitting a spinebuster on Ambrose and Rollins hitting three suplexes in a row on Triple H. When the match descended into fighting between everyone once more, Rollins leaped from a production case only to suffer a blow with something metal from Triple H. Evolution began to emerge as the dominant faction in this battle, leaving every member of The Shield fallen throughout the arena. The trio sent Reigns through the Spanish announce table with a triple powerbomb. The focus remained on Reigns as Evolution attacked him with kendo sticks, bashed him with the steel steps and tore off his vest. Somehow, the powerhouse survived. Reigns would spear Batista for Rollins to pin and eliminate him. The shift of momentum toward The Shield continued. Ambrose would hit a Dirty Deeds on Orton on a chair to take him out of the match. This left Triple H alone as the remaining Evolution member. Orton (despite being eliminated) then handed Triple H his signature sledgehammer, and Triple H knocked Ambrose down with one shot. Rollins then hit a knee dive onto Triple H on the temple, following by Reigns spearing him for the win to mark The Shield's final match together as a trio.

Aftermath

On the June 2 episode of Raw, Stephanie McMahon announced that Daniel Bryan will defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Kane in a stretcher match if he is able to compete.[23] If Bryan is not able to compete, he will be stripped of the title, and the Money in the Bank ladder match will be for the vacated WWE World Heavyweight Championship. However, Bryan was officially stripped of the title on the June 9 episode of Raw.[24][25]

While Evolution was in the ring addressing that their loss to The Shield is not the end of their feud, Batista interrupted Triple H, demanding the one-on-one WWE World Heavyweight Championship match which he earned at the Royal Rumble. After Triple H explained that Batista cannot have a title shot that night due to Bryan's injury, Batista announced his resignation and left the ring. Later that night, Triple H and Randy Orton confronted The Shield, with Triple H announcing that their loss at Payback was "Plan A", and that he had a "Plan B". Without warning, Seth Rollins attacked Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns with a steel chair, effectively turning his back on The Shield and aligning himself with The Authority.[26]

Bo Dallas took on Kofi Kingston in a rematch. Bo ended up defeating Kingston, continuing his undefeated streak.[27]

After losing to Ryback and Curtis Axel in a tag match, Cody Rhodes told Goldust he deserved a better partner. The next night on Raw, Cody choose Sin Cara as the new partner for Goldust and the two took on Curtis Axel and Ryback. Sin Cara and Goldust ended up losing and Cody, who was watching the match backstage, had a disappointed look on his face. He then proceeded to choose R-Truth next week on Raw and finally as a new persona called Stardust.

In June, Paige feuded with Cameron and defeated her in two non-title matches. However, Cameron's tag team partner Naomi went on to beat Paige in a non-title match, leading to Naomi being granted a title match at Money in the Bank, which she lost.
