The Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located on Wallops Island, Virginia; the refuge was created on July 10, 1975, with the transfer of 373 acres (1.51 km2) of land from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service along with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Much of the property is marshy, and there is also a sea-level fen on the island. The refuge was opened to public deer hunting in 2002 in an attempt to control local animal populations.
