Waterloo is a train station in Waterloo, Indiana served by Amtrak, the national passenger rail system in the United States. The station is a single-platformed shelter with a handicapped-accessible ramp.
Of the 11 Indiana stations served by Amtrak, Waterloo was the third-busiest in FY2010, after Indianapolis and Lafayette, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 60 passengers daily.[2] The station is 25 miles north of Fort Wayne, Indiana and when the current station was opened in 1990, it was connected to Fort Wayne by an Amtrak bus, which is no longer in service.[3]
In October 2010, the town of Waterloo received a $1.8 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to build a longer platform just east of the current station, to bring the station up to ADA standards, to add a canopy, lighting, interactive signs, and to incorporate into the station the historic rail depot, which was restored during 2010.[4]
Norfolk Southern, which owns the tracks used by Amtrak trains in Waterloo, expressed concern over the siting of the proposed platform. In response, a new concept was put forth calling for the construction of a modern climate controlled depot with restrooms on the east side of N. Center Street.[5] The stop will also include a full length platform, walkways, lighting, signage, fencing and additional parking spaces. Estimated to cost $6 million, the facility was to be paid for in part through Waterloo’s TIGER grant. Construction was expected to begin early 2013 with completion by 2014.[6] However, Amtrak lost additional funding it would have given to Waterloo in the 2013 budget sequestration, and the depot was never built. The town now plans to move the historic New York Central depot to a position across from the existing platform, add additional lighting and walkways, implement electronic signage and pave a new parking lot; the project is expected to be completed by May 2016.[7]
