William Hardie (archbishop of the West Indies)
The Most Rev William George Hardie, CBE[1] (1878 – 21 February 1950) was a long serving Anglican Bishop of Jamaica from 1931 until 1949; and for the last four of that time Archbishop of the West Indies.
He was born in 1878 and educated at Giggleswick School[2] and Emmanuel College, Cambridge and ordained in 1902.[3][4] His first posts were curacies at Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge[5] and then Christ Church, Greenwich.[6] Later he held incumbencies at Holy Trinity, Swansea,[7] St John’s, Lowestoft[8] and St Luke’s, Finchley.[9] In 1928 he was appointed Assistant Bishop[10] of Jamaica[11] before promotion to be its Diocesan three years later.[12] He died on 21 February 1950.
