The 1896 Notre Dame football team was an American football team that represented the University of Notre Dame in the 1896 college football season. Frank E. Hering was the team's captain and coach. The team compiled a 4–3 record, shut out four opponents, and outscored its opponents by a combined total of 182 to 50. The team played all of its games in South Bend and defeated South Bend Athletic Club (46–0), Albion College (24–0), Highland Views (82–0), and Beloit College (8–0), but lost games to the College of Physicians & Surgeons (0–4), Chicago (0–18), and Purdue (22–28).[1]
