The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1970 was the 84th series of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, Ireland's premier hurling knock-out competition. Cork won the championship, beating Wexford 6-21 to 5-10 in the final at Croke Park, Dublin.

Rule change

As a result of a decision taken at the Gaelic Athletic Association's (GAA) annual congress the previous year, as of 1970 all provincial finals, All-Ireland semi-finals and the All-Ireland final itself were exteneded to 80 minutes playing time. Prior to this all championship matches were sixty minutes in duration.

Teams

A total of fourteen teams contested the championship, including thirteen teams from the 1969 championship and one new entrant.

The Leinster championship was extended to seven teams as Kildare entered the provincial series of games. They had won the All-Ireland title at intermediate level in 1969 and decided to make the step up to the senior grade.

Galway left the Munster championship where they had been playing since the 1959 championship and returned to the old system whereby they entered the All-Ireland semi-finals.

Format

Leinster Championship

First round: (1 match) This was a single match between the first two 'weaker' teams drawn from the province of Leinster. One team was eliminated at this stage while the winning team advanced to the quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals: (2 matches) The winner of the lone first round game joined three other Leinster teams to make up the quarter-final pairings. Two teams were eliminated at this stage while the two winning teams advanced to the semi-finals.

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The winners of the two quarter-finals joined the two remaining Leinster teams to make up the semi-final pairings. Two teams were eliminated at this stage while the two winning teams advanced to the final.

Final: (1 match) The winners of the two semi-finals contested this game. One team was eliminated at this stage while the winning team advanced to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

Munster Championship

Quarter-final: (1 match) This was a single match between the first two teams drawn from the province of Munster. One team was eliminated at this stage while the winning team advanced to the semi-finals.

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The winner of the lone quarter-final joined the other three Munster teams to make up the semi-final pairings. Two teams were eliminated at this stage while the two winning teams advanced to the final.

Final: (1 match) The winners of the two semi-finals contested this game. One team was eliminated at this stage while the winning team advanced to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

All-Ireland Championship

Semi-finals: (2 matches) The two provincial winners were paired on opposite sides with Galway and London making up the four semi-final teams. Two teams were eliminated at this stage while the two winning teams advanced to the final.

Final: (1 match) The winners of the two semi-finals contested this game with the winners being declared All-Ireland champions.
